So my 11 and 13 yr old sons asked me what "g*y" means.
In the past, I told them "stupid" or "silly" because that is how their friends were using it.However! recently at their club meeting two girls called them that because they were talking with another boy.ugh!
I really don't want to even introduce the concept at such a tender age.
Any ideas?

This is difficult Aagot. We had to deal with this not too long ago when there was quite a mess over this issue at the highschool my ds attended. I wrote a blog post about it, to which I will give you the link if you are interested. I was very upset by it all so the blog post is a bit raw, for lack of a better word.
The issue happened at the highschool and my ds who went there was 18 so old enough to handle it and discuss it, imo. Unfortunately, because of the news media and all the gossip, and the talk and the fact that the school is an academy, grades K-12 so much younger children were a witness to the whole thing, it eventually came to the ears of my younger children, who weren't old enough, again, imo.
I tried to explain it to my then 10 and 12 yo by explaining that God created men and women to get married or be a priest or nun. We had talked about vocations so they knew about all this. I then told them that a gay person is one who thinks it is okay to "marry" someone of their own sex. We believe this is wrong because it is not how God created us to live, it is not "natural" and if we do not live as God created us to live, we will never find peace. That seemed to suffice. I'm sure as they get older they will have more questions, but I'm hoping that they will be mature enough to handle them. My 13 yo has already asked more questions and I give as little information about that particular issue as I can, until she is emotionally ready to deal with it.

This came up recently with my 11yo in the same way it did in your home, Aagot. Fortunately I'd already talked to someone who had been through a similar conversation. I focused on God's plan and purpose for men and women (men and women have different strengths; from the beginning it was so; raising children as a family unit). I said for some people their minds don't work right (like other illnesses) and they are attracted to their same sex. It is unnatural and we should pray for those people. It's obviously wrong for people to use that as a joke or insult just like it's not okay to say someone is retarded.

Thanks for the advice. It is just so sad because my kids really thought it meant "happy, joyful, gleeful". I guess there is no way to return to Paradise

Carefree, like the Gay 90s. It DOES mean that. There are just different definitions now, and the slang one that they encountered is different.
The other problem is the misuse of the slang word. I have heard "That is so g*y." Now what is THAT supposed to mean? Lame?
I'm sorry they had to hear this and find it all out.

Oh if you wanted to see my grammy get SO MAD you just had to bring this up.. because it really set her off that they took the word "gay", which was a really wonderful word and made it something else.

This makes me so sad. What little child doesn't want to draw a rainbow?? My girls do all the time, it is likely the thing they draw/paint most often (hey, I have all these colors I want to use them!). I hate that to the outside world it has such a different meaning
