Wasn't there a thread somewhere on this board about preferences for everyday dishes? We've broken so many of the cereal bowls in my cheap stoneware set I'm thinking about getting something new, but I can't find the thread with other's recommendations.
Did I just miss it or did I imagine it in my sleep deprived brain?

OH, I was thinking about that conversation last week. I got a Pfaltzgraft catalog and there are now some melamine or acrylic plates, bowls, etc. in some of their patterns. Hooray! This is definitely on my "to buy when I can" list.

We've had Correlle for several years now after I got sick and tired of my nice stonewear being impractical.
I got solid white, without even a texture, so if a piece breaks it's easy to get another white dish to blend in and cheap enough that I don't sweat it. They can break, but it's much harder to break them and happens much less often. They can go from stove top, to oven, to frig, to microwave, etc.. so there's no worries there. They are also very light weight, which means the kids don't drop them as easily as the heavier stonewear.

Thanks for posting this link. I read it all last night. The link to the J.C. Penney set is out-of-date, but I think I found the same set? here
It's really nice looking and it comes in 4 colors!

hmmm, that is really nice and good price for stonewear. Although I don't know that I'd use some of the pieces at all - like napkin rings...
Also, it's still stonewear, so I foresee much chipping and such with so many kids in use.
For the price you could get the more usuable dish pieces of correlle. This is a good time of year to get them too. Kids going to college or weddings make for some great sales on Correlle. I purchased several sets when we switched for a total of 30 person place settings and I think it cost me around $75. So far, only 2 bowls and 1 saucer have broken/chipped in 7 years.

It is similar but not exactly the same. The previous set is here .
It only came in white when I got it but now comes in red, blue and black (though I'd still buy white).

The set I got is here.
I'm pretty sure I paid less than it's currently listed at but that's still a good price. I have had stoneware in the past that did indeed chip but not one piece of this set has chipped or broken in the year we have had it and believe me my kids are hard on dishes! I am quite pleased with how it's holding up. We don't mormally use napkin rings either but the kids think they are fun and so we use them because we have them. 
I love the small bowls in this set, they are perfect for breakfast and the teacups are a nice size as well. My only complaint would be that the dinner plates are so big I can't completely close my cabinet door. But that's more of an issue with my cabinets than it is the plates.

Just how big are the dinner plates? I am thinking that they might be practical for our family. I really like the blue colored ones.
Our dishwasher needed repair a few months ago and our boys were helping with the handwash. When our eldest was putting away the dinner plates, he leaned on one of the shelves and a stack of dishes fell on his head. (I was sure we were headed to the e.r., but thankfully - miraculously - he was fine, did not even shed a tear).
This mishap resulted in the loss of all of our breakfast bowls. At least the children still have their sippy bowls, but poor Daddy just cannot get used to my frugal replacement of oversized mismatching stoneware bowls from the dollar store.

ahhhh... good to know, thank you! Those are even cheaper too and I actually like the style more - that's a nice bonus!
one question.. do you use them for the infants too? That's something I've become spoiled on with my correlle - we can hand the food out even to the babies without worry, so I don't have any special baby dishes anymore.

My youngest used to throw his plate when he was finished eating. After he broke a couple of corelle plates, we started using a little Noah's Ark plate set for him (probably similar to Michele's Peter Rabbit set).

mmm...My ds did that too with corelle and I never saw little shards of glass go so far...even as high as 3 shelves high in the nearby bookcase! We have been using pfaltzgraff and the lovely set that I had when I got married is almost gone... Trousseau it chipped sooo easily! I loved the pedestal mugs and the rim soup bowls...sigh
We were gifted from 3 different sources with another pattern of pfaltzgraff Yorktowne and it is holding up better, but the tea cups and the cereal bowls have a high mortality rate! I am looking for something that will last...I am reeeeallly tired of having a perpetual breakage box that I tape up for the garbageman.....don't want him to get cut ;)
I couldnt beat the price of the last 3 sources of dishes...mostly free from people who didn't want to have something that would chip!  ...no matter how hard we try we can't get rid of it! There are so many accent pieces to this set, including a soup tureen, which I love...It keeps coming to our home like a stray puppy!

Thank you so much for finding the link!
So now I have a question...what's better, do you think? Risking the shattering of Corelle or the chipping problems of Stoneware? I have a hardwood floor...softer than tile but not as soft as linoleum. I should mention my 9 yr old unloads the dishwasher!

Like Sarah I use corelle. I bought the white one about 2 years ago and have never had a problem. None of the pieces have broken or shattered. They have been dropped on our hardwood floor more that once and survived. They are not the prettiest or the most elegant dishes but I find them very practical.

We use Corelle too. We had another set of dishes, but one of the big reasons I like Corelle is they don't take up very much room in my teeny cabinets  .
I got the sandstone instead of white, and I am able to replace pieces, or add things on, very inexpensivly ( and a piece at a time if I have to.) And I love being able to buy the deep bowls.
We have only had one piece break ( and it was me who did it, not even the kids ) and wow, it did shatter. But usually, Corelle bounces, even on my ceramic tile floor.
However, when I purchased my first set, I was NOT impressed with the clear glasses that came with it.

We use corelle for spring and summer. For fall and winter we have some cream stoneware (that chips ). I have the Livingware Vintage Blue it looks very nice with our agua blue walls. We have wood floors and human (young boys) dishwashers  so dishes that do not chip is a big plus here.
For lunch and breakfast we use plastic from Wallmart and Target. So the littlest boys can do dishes.

I would go with corelle over stoneware. Despite the shattered plates, I believe it is very practical and lasts forever (as long as you don't have a little one who throws plates). We have a plain white set and a white set with blue flowers.
When my dad moved, one of my sisters took all of my parents' old corelle dishes and got rid of her stoneware. She is very happy with her decision.
