Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anyone else freaked out about the (impending) possible Depression that everyone seems to keep saying is inevitable? Just read another news report today. As a mom of a large family, I am worried I must admit. Anyone else taking measures? Not sure of where to even begin?

God bless,
Kim

Well, glad no one is freaked out. That makes me feel a little better.

I try not to freak out but I have to keep tight reins on myself to not go there in my head...

I could go there, easily...

The next 6 months could really make a big difference in what happens, IMHO.

More when I can...

Not freaking out. Fear is not a place you can make good decisions from.

Prudent choices on the other hand..

Even if there's not a widespread depression, there can be illness, job loss, natural disaster, man-made disaster, etc etc.

It can be completely prudent to do what you can. Storing food, learning skills that you consider as being potentially useful, starting conversations with friends, family or neighbors.

Focus on what you can do. Not on what you wish you could do.

One good thing I found in the Y2K debacle was a simple phrase "Are you prepared to be wrong?". If you think a depression is a sure thing and you go all out preparing and it doesn't happen, is what you did going to hurt you if it doesn't happen that way? What if you don't think it'll happen and do nothing to prepare but it does happen?   I find this phrase really helps stay within prudence. Yes it's a good idea to store food that will store and that your family eats, you can use it regardless if a depression happens or not. No it's not a good idea to stockpile foods that you wouldn't eat unless it was the only thing left, massive waste of money and food if you end up tossing it out.

What might be good things to do?
Get out of debt?
Have some food stored?
Learn some skills that you'd like to have?
I'm sure there's other things..

I think many people in the USA are worried because they don't have the skills Jodie mentioned in her post. If you had to fend for yourself for a short while, what would happen?

I grew up in a family that seriously prepared for earthquakes. (Food, supplies in cars, furniture bolted to walls, etc.) I learned to do some basic preparation for any possible disaster and then trust the outcome to the Good Lord. I have a small food pantry for power outages, etc. I can cook on a campfire and bake my own bread. I have an emergency fund.

I find that if I am prepared for things that realistically could arise (translation: no one can prepare for the Apocalypse, so I don't try, but I do prepare for power outages!), I have few reasons to worry. I can get on with life once I've figured out how to cope with a problem that worries me.

I have also found, over the years, that praying to the Holy Spirit helps immensely. All those Gifts of the Holy Spirit you received at Confirmation? They are still yours to claim, and you should ask for them every day. Wisdom, knowledge, fortitude, etc. - just the right gifts for troubled times.

we were all freaked out about y2k, and we see where that went    I am trying now to trust in the abundance of God in everything and not base my decisions in fear and scarcity mindset. I think if you have a plot of land to grow some food, and safe shelter, good Holy Mass and clothes, we will all be ok.

Is this a *new* depression?? I haven't seen anything about an impending depression, just the recession we are currently in.

Oh but we're not in a recession that one is over. Their magical mystical numbers (or whatever) say so.

Of course I'm pretty sure that none of them go grocery shopping

I know this is hitting us hard. Groceries for 9 is never easy no matter how tight you buy. My DH is VERY worried and has asked me to try and find a family to watch for daycare so I can raise some money to put into savings cause he is very sure we will need it this winter. He is self-employed and already seeing a lot of bad things happening this winter.
