In this, very unscientific poll, I'm trying to find out if there is a correllation between when a baby gets teeth and when a nursing mom's fertility returns.

I voted 6-8 months, but a couple have been 8-10 months. The children's old dentist told me that it was hereditary and a child will follow either Mom or Dad's side of the family, both in when their teeth come in and when they fall out.

I know there are many factors in the return of fertility. But in talking with some moms we noticed that the ones whose children got teeth earlier had an earlier return of fertility, inspite of nursng without supplementing, etc.
God made our bodies to respond and be a little different in this area.
So I thought I would check with the experts!

Interesting theory. I did respond to the poll. All 4 of my children did get their first tooth by 4-6 months and my fertility return for all was relatively the same, 18-19 months. My youngest son who got his earliest - right at 4 months had 8 teeth by 6 months - definitely the earliest teether. No difference in my fertility return.

I have only 1 child, but fertility returned at 5 months and teeth didn't come until almost 12 months. We didn't start eating solids until about 8 months.
The heredity in teeth seems to run in our family...my siblings were late with teeth, and their children are repeating a similar pattern.

All my children started getting teeth at 6 months except for #3 she waited until she was 15 months old. Fertility returned at 6 months with her.

Bridget,
Now I understand. My brains a little dense lately. Even though I read your original post, I thought you were trying to figure out whether the amount of time a child nursed affected when the teeth came in. I need more sleep.

I probably did not phrase it well either.
Our fertility is such a delicate and beautiful thing and there are so many minute variations on how it works for each of us. I find it endlessly fascinating.
It seems that any connection with teeth and fertility return is more about the fact that moms usually introduce solids when the teeth appear. I was wondering if the actual timing of teeth was an indicator of what God has planned for a particular mom.

I don't think so for me...
All of mine, except 1, had almost all their teeth by 4 months. That 1 exception didn't get a single tooth until nearly 18 months.
I introduce "solids" when the baby seems to show an inclination to need/want it. We don't do baby jar foods, just mash up bits of whatever we are eating and let them eat off our plate. For some, they didn't want solids until nearly a year old. Others ate everything in sight at 4 months.
Regardless, my cycle has returned no later than 6 months post-partum and as early as 3 months. We don't do pacifiers, or bottles, and they sleep with us and all that. This is just the way my body works.

This is an interesting poll. My two boys got their teeth at four months and began to lose them at 4 years. They both nursed until age three. My fertility returned at 26 and 22 months. My daughter cut her first tooth at 6 months and is not old enough to lose them yet. She nursed for 2 years and my fertility returned at 19 months with her.

My daughter cut her first tooth at five months, had 4 by the time she reached six months. My fertility returned at 9 months.
My son cut his first tooth at six months, had 4 by the time he was 7 months. My fertility returned at 9 or 10 months.

We ecologically bf yet up until this baby, my cycles returned between 5-6 months. This baby is almost 7 months. I recently read the 7 principles in Breast Feeding & Natural Child Spacing. The only one I do/did not practice regularly was an afternoon nap w/baby. The book said that one principle alone could cause fertility to come back early. I have napping more this time BTW. I have 3 close girlfriends; myself & one ecologically bf by the book - early cycles. The other 2 use pacifers, early solids, no co-sleeping, one of them schedules her babies, etc. Their cycles do not return until their baby stops nursing completely!
I think stress plays a major role b/c the 2 I just mentioned; very laid back. The friend that is like me; we are both a little more worrisome.

I was wondering if a nursing mom's weight had anything to do with it...I know it has a lot to do with frequency nursing and nursing at night too...maybe it is a combination of a lot of things? I have a friend who is thin and never gets her cycle back till after the baby weans...and this could be 2 years! hmm...

Hmmm. I have 2 friends who are really fertile. Even with nursing. Their babies get early teeth and the moms are heavy. They say they get pregnant sooner when they are at their heavier weights.
It's all connected somehow!

Dear Ladies,
I had lots of problems nursing my babies ...after Sophia was born, it was suspected that I didn't have the glands...
Now that my sister is being treated for her thyroid problems, I am wondering if my nursing problems weren't related as I am suspect that I have thyroid problems...I took double doses of herbs, pumped, worked with my midwife and lactation consultants for weeks on end and tried my hardest...it was ....
On the other hand, I also wouldn't have who I have now - these 4 awesome kids - if I had been able to nurse - I would have been one of those moms who let her babies nurse longer than a year...
I'm hoping that one daym we'll have more children and I'll be able to nurse...I turned 38 this year...

Thanks be to God for formula. The old system of wet nurses for those who couldn't or wouldn't nurse seems to have led to much abuse. I'm sure your children are happy, healthy and well loved, Maria.

My first 3 cut their teeth around the 6-8 month mark and my fertility returned at 6 months, but my youngest had her first tooth at 4 months and my fertility returned at 10 months.
All this stuff really is fascinating.

Chari,
I just saw this....thank you, it made me - in the best way. Steve just sent in his application for a truck driving position with Gordon Trucking up in Washington...he's still working at the computer job from last year but since this IT field has proven to be sooooo stable he went and got his truck driving license. So, about camping, we're in a holding pattern.
Did you have a good birthday? How was your trip?

Dear Bridget,
I have five children, the first three were over 9months before they got teeth, some were walking before this, so it was very topsy turvy.
The second two surprised me with teeth appearing at 6-7month mark.
The only factors that I could think of was that the last two babies were after my 'vegan-vegetarian' years. The last two also breastfeed exclusively until 12months not even interested in food.
Could both these factors be that my breastmilk was more deficient in the earlier years due to my diet? I don't know but it is possible.
My fertility has stayed exactly the same though for all of them 14-15 months after birth but I will say that my mother was the same - could that be hereditary?
