My 8 year old son went to play with a friend today, but the boy's parents picked him up and drove him to their house. This is the first time he is riding in a car with someone other than family or grandparents, and I was really uneasy. He's my firstborn so hopefully I'll be less worried and protective with the others. What kind of blessings do you give your children before they leave the house, go to bed, ride in cars, etc.? I thought I heard of a book of blessings once, but I didn't know if that was just for priests.

Here's examples of parental blessings. My mother would sign the cross on my head when I would leave.
She would also pray the family trip prayer for us. I'll have to track that down for you. It's a mouthful, and a combination of two prayers.

Glad it helped!
My family and my cousin's family say a combination for our travel prayers:
Quote:
Along the ways of peace and prosperity may the almighty and merciful Lord lead us, and may the Angel Raphael accompany us on the journey. So may we in peace, health, and joy return unto our own.
Let us Pray,
O God, who hast commissioned Thy angels to guide and protect us, command them to be our assiduous companions from our setting out until our return; to clothe us with their invisible protection; to keep us from all danger of collision, of fire, of explosion, of falls and bruises; and finally, having preserved us from all evil, and especially from sin, to guide us to our heavenly home. Through Jesus' name. Amen. |

First prayer was adapted from the Roman Ritual, both prayers taken from The Prayer Book: Beautiful and Helpful Prayers from Ancient and Modern Sources, The Catholic Press, 1954. Edited by John P. O’Connell and Jax Martin.

I really like this! I'll have to print it out and post it somewhere by our door, or maybe in the car. Thanks for your help.

I do as Jennifer does..
We sign our children on the forehead
We often give the parental Blessing.
Our youngest dd loves receiving this Blessing

Here are a couple threads from the past as well with some different variations.
Blessing threads:
Blessing Your Children
Feast of the Holy Innocents
And I thought of this thread in Mass this weekend. The first reading has a great blessing which would work for this purpose.
Quote:
The LORD bless you and keep you!
The LORD let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you!
The LORD look upon you kindly and give you peace! |

I thought the same thing, Mary!
And how about the blessing from St. Francis to Brother Leo:
Quote:
God bless you and keep you
May God smile on you, and be merciful to you;
May God turn his regard towards you
and give you peace. |

My mother still signs my forehead when we're leaving for a trip or something when she's nearby.
I sign my children's heads before bed and when I check on them when they are sleeping.
