I started potty boot camp today as read in this thread, and boy, it's very taxing. I have extra clothes and old cloth diapers at the ready for cleanups, and I keep saying my prayers. Of course, the baby already fell and busted his lips (I don't like blood ) because I was trying to help the trainee. Also, I'm already doing my first load of wet pants and clean-up supplies and it's only 10:30.

I'm trying to hold the frustration off, but it's beginning to simmer a bit.

I'm here and cheering!!!!

     YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!

Hang in there because today is going to be rough, but there is light at the end of this tunnel!!! Blissful, no diaper-wearing, potty-trained light!!!!!! REMEMBER....don't do anything else today BUT THIS!!! Washing clothes and going to the potty with that timer is the ONLY thing on your agenda today, and for the rest of the week!

Do you have your rewards planned for tonight?? This is super important! Glass of wine? Chocolate bar? Popcorn and veging in front of HGTV? Something!!!!! ANYTHING!!!! But you need something to look forward to for the after bedtime hours!!!!!

Long day, but I kept my cool for the most part. Only a few times of resistance, but overall he was fairly compliable about going to potty every 15 minutes. I almost gave in when baby's naptime rolled around, but thankfully today was a day when he slept without me holding him . I need to go back and read the original thread again to gather some strength for tomorrow.

Now, off to nurse the baby and relax for a bit before hitting the bed.

Thanks for the cheering today!

Third day and I'm sick and feeling very frustrated. I'm still timing his potty breaks (I make him go every 20 minutes), but he's still having accidents. He will not voluntarialy go potty, but at least he does tell me when he's wet.

When do I chalk it up to immaturity or is my feeling ill getting in the way of the process?

Stay strong!

This is GREAT!!!!! This is training - you're training him to recognize that HE IS WET! Next step for him is associating wet/dry with no potty/potty.

If you stick with this in a neutral way, he WILL begin to associate that when he goes to potty, he doesn't get wet. But you CANNOT make this a power struggle or let him know you're flustered or upset or angry. That will factor into his ability to be trained and simply see a direct consequence:

POTTY-->CONSEQUENCE-->I'M DRY
>>versus<<
NO POTTY-->CONSEQUENCE-->I'M WET/DIRTY

if your emotions play into this at all here's what he sees:

NO POTTY-->CONSEQUENCE-->MOMMY GETS MAD

See the difference? You want him to associate the icky wet feeling with the potty, not with your emotions and frustration.

So....third day pep-talk....YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!! DEEP BREATH, resolve to stick with the potty timer and keep using your very neutral-not upset-nonplussed-matter of fact VOICE!!!!!! You can state the consequence for him simply to help him, but NO EMOTION OR ANGER OR IRRITATION! You could say, "I see you're wet. When you go to the potty you stay dry. Time to clean up. Go get your clean undies and put your wet stuff in Mom's wet bucket, please." And then go about your business (but close by in case he needs some help).

Where is my favorite potty-time cheerleader????? SUZANNE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Putting on my cheerleading hat!!!!                                  You can do this, Lara!!!!!

Ugh....you're sick. Not optimal. But STILL DO-ALBE!!!!!!

I was at the beginning of my pregnancy last time through, and nauseous....so I can feel your pain.

And, he's telling you that he's wet!!!!!! That's TOTALLY GREAT! You're on your way!!!! You're on-track....that's exactly what I would expect.

Seriously, Lara...this is the TRAINING! He's learning! He's discovering this whole new world! It's WORKING!!!!!!! Keep going! Where's the link to the song"Don't stop....believin'??!!!

Look at this third day from my 2 yo from the other thread......you are totally on track!

She probably went outside a couple times and I just don't know about it.

And....prepping you for the next couple of days....

[quote]:: 4th day - 1st day that she said, "Go potty!!!!!!" TELLING US she had to go. FINALLY! (this took about a day longer with her than with the other girls.)   Everything went in the toilet all day....no accidents!

:: 6th day - no more timer. Going by self.

:: 7th day - Family Outing !!!! Potty Training Lockdown is OVER!!!!!!!!!!!   Everything went in the potty chair!!!!! Still reminding her regularly, but sometimes going by self.   We were gone for about 2.5 hours at the beach and was taken to the bathroom twice, but didn't go. So she made it 2.5 hours holding it!!

Wow, what a great cheerleading thread and the old one is so helpful! I'm realizing I may have gotten in over my head potty training my 3 1/2 year old twins at the same time. My brain is turning to mush from the whole thing.. as they have been moved from diapers to half diapers/half "training pants/ gerber underwear during the day over the last few months, with the now 3 1/2 month old around too and I think I'm going a bit crazy. So many messes! They get the peeing but only one gets the #2 and while the first got to the potty for a poop yesterday, and almost did today, the other had 6 #1 accidents today! and a couple #2s! We've done no lockdown and have had activities every so often..so that probably hasn't helped. We have one outing we can't cancel tomorrow afternoon but its a time they are okay in underwear. Basically we went all underwear when we ran out of Target training pants except at night, and I have not been putting them on every 20 minutes because between baby, housework and homeschooling I just haven't remembered/prioritized it...
Advice? Have I gone about this all wrong?
I have potty trained my two olders, but it seems so long ago.. they were both under 3, and now its two at once with an infant. They are so close. Maybe just some encouragement? After reading the potty lockdown ideas I have some prep to do for tomorrow so I'm off to get my stacks of clothes and towels. :)

I didn't give up and he's taking off like a pro! One accident because he didn't make it in time, but we did not use the timer at all today.      He's going to potty with only a bit of prompting if I see him showing signs of having to go.

I'm so excited!

Amanda, I'll pray for your patience and sanity! Setting the timer and focusing on that for those three days really did the trick for him. I didn't do school, did light housework and cooking (as long as it could be interrupted), and did not go anywhere. If the baby was nursing, I left him attached and carried him to the bathroom (same if we was sleeping on me). It was exhausting, but today I can say it was soooooooooooo worth it!

I did want to mention that I was diligent about saying this after he sat on the potty with or without peeing in the potty:

"Pee goes in the potty. Where does pee go?" wait for answer, if no answer prompt with "in the potty".

"Does pee go in our pants? No, pee goes in the potty."

That seemed to help him get the concept. I did not do rewards or incentives or punishment, but I did do lots of praising when he went on the potty.

Oh, and I really pushed fluids so that he would go a lot.

I'm late to this cheerleading party, but....

Now, just so you know, Lara, it's still possible for accidents to happen because while potty lockdown takes about a week for success to be seen....TRAINING CONTINUES FOR SOME TIME!!!!. So it's important not to be disheartened in the face of little accidents! In fact, after training my 3yo she did some serious backsliding because we had some SERIOUS EMOTIONAL UPHEAVAL going on around here. When that happens, whether it's one accident, or a couple, just keep focused and remind yourself that you're still training.

** Go back to your friend the timer for a bit, slowly stretching the time between potty trips.
** Stay neutral when accidents happen.
** Remember to focus training on natural consequences of dry=potty.

I'm so glad the week worked so well for you, but I never had a doubt!!!!!!! All things being equal (no health issues, focused potty lockdown), this is a WORKING METHOD!!!

I'm so glad that Pilgrim is having great success with her potty training, BUT for some reason we are having no luck.

We did so well, but now he acts like he doesn't know anything about going on the potty. If I put him in a pull-up, he won't go on the potty. If I put him in underwear he will pee on the potty but #2 in his pants . It's too cold to let him run around naked, but I'm so frustrated! What went wrong? He totally had this!

Any ideas?

Haven't been back to this thread in a while, but I wanted to say thanks for the cheers and encouragement Lara and Jen! We've come far, but we are still having issues. One pretty much always knows/says he needs to go. From the other I hear a lot of "already peepee and poopoo"

So I totally feel your pain Lara. No pullups here though we did go to them at night, because every. morning. we were having to change/wash sheets.

Prayers for you. And my only advice would be no pull-ups during the day, if at all possible.
