Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

How do you force a child (and I mean that in the gentlest way possible ) to potty train! I am done, D-O-N-E with this child being in diapers. This is my third child, a son, and he's being very difficult.    I know, I know, he'll go when he's ready, but I'm ready NOW! Diapers are soooo expensive and all my cloth are too small since he's getting to be a big boy (he's 3 next month). I'm just so done with diapers. My oldest recently went back in nighttime pants since I was tired of chaning his wet sheets each morning (he's 5), plus I have the baby to change as well.

I've tried everything that I can think of, so help me think of something else. I've tried rewards, I've tried punishment (even spanking, not my finest hour at all ), I've tried ignoring it, I've let him run around naked, I bought special underwear, I've read books to him.....He knows how to use the potty. He does it when prompted, he's excited when he does it, so I can see he has the ability to know when to go. He just won't do it!

Whew, thanks for letting me vent. Did I say how done I was with diapers! Okay, maybe I'm letting all my other stress focus in on this one area, but I would love to get him potty trained soon.

Any advice, prayers, etc?

Thanks! I haven't been around recently, but I do keep everybody in my prayers.

Thank you! I was feeling so frustrated and thought there couldn't be anybody that's ever been this frustrated.    Next time I'll put aside emotions and do the search thing.      I usually do search more than write, but today was one of THOSE days.

((((((((((Hugs))))))) hows it going?
I am in the trenches with you today. DS3 will be 3 in Jan.
We tried again today and it did not go well at all!!
We tried 3 different times sitting on the potty for 10 + minutes with books and drinks, and all 3 times he had an accident within 5 min of getting off the potty .... When DS2 did that we just stopped and tried again a month later with much better success. DS3 has the verbal ability and is able to pull his pants down and get on the potty almost by himself, but just doesn't seem to be making the connection, plus he is going through a "no" phase, so that might be part of the problem too; he spent most of the morning throwing fits and asking for a diaper and pants :-/

Oh, this is so funny, Vanessa....I was JUST coming over here to ask Lara how it was going....if that other thread have her any ideas or was a jumping off point for a potty-plan! Well, Lara???? Any big plans that you will need LOTS of CHOCOLATE and WINE for?????    Do you need to brainstorm anything??? Let us know! We're here to serve your every potty-training-brainstorming-need!

I think this is COMPLETELY NORMAL! We go ALL DAY without a single success that first day. Totally normal! And, my kids aren't just sitting on the potty 3 times.....it's more like THIRTY TIMES that first day, and they STILL aren't having a single success!

They are learning what this is all about and figuring it out. Keep going....don't stop!!! Did you see my day-by-day-breakdown in the other thread?

SuzanneG wrote:

:: 1st day - about 10 pair of leggings wet. Nothing in the potty chair. A typical, disastrous, first day!

:: 2nd day - about 3 pair of leggings wet. FINALLY went in the potty chair for the first time around dinner time.    (she was holding it longer, hence less "accidents")

:: 3rd day - Went about 4 times on the potty. No leggings wet, BUT......we were also outside, in swimsuits, in pool....and I was not as vigilant (first day of hot weather here) so it's not nec. representative of what "really happened." She probably went outside a couple times and I just don't know about it.

:: 4th day - 1st day that she said, "Go potty!!!!!!" TELLING US she had to go. FINALLY! (this took about a day longer with her than with the other girls.)   Everything went in the toilet all day....no accidents!

:: 5th day - still setting the timer, but only every hour. Went by self 3 times. No accidents. (Friday)

:: 6th day - no more timer. Going by self.

:: 7th day - Family Outing !!!! Potty Training Lockdown is OVER!!!!!!!!!!!   Everything went in the potty chair!!!!! Still reminding her regularly, but sometimes going by self.   We were gone for about 2.5 hours at the beach and was taken to the bathroom twice, but didn't go. So she made it 2.5 hours holding it!!

**************************

This time took a bit longer than usual. Probably because of the hot weather and the pool-stuff on day 3. And, that 3rd day (which is pivotal) when it was 90 degrees, I was exhausted, still somewhat nauseous, and potty training, so I wasn't as vigilant.

And, we probably "could have" gone out on day 6, but...well, we didn't have anywhere to go and I needed to recover! So, it was a 6-day lockdown, which is my longest.....but WHO CARES????!!!!!!!! It's DONE!!!!!!! No more diapers!

Depressing, isn't it??? But, oh-so-sweet once it's DONE!

Thanks for the encouragement ladies!    I gave up. I got so frustrated that I threw in the towel. My next move is to try the Potty Lockdown from the other thread, so I'm trying to clear a week of our schedule to allow for us to be home at least 7 days. Looks like next week or the week after might be the time we try again.

I truly appreciate the cheering!

I already ate all the chocolate , and can't do the wine yet , so I'll need to restock for the coming weeks.

Ayi yi, a week lock down! I guess I will have to suck it up, but I think I need the 4 month old to not be quite so needy... I just couldn't handle the hands on potty training when I can't put him down without him screaming his head off...

Our babe is finally old enough (one year old now) to entertain while I tackle this potty stuff. I'm not looking forward to it, but I'm so tired of changing diapers.
