Homeschooling, that is. We're only two weeks into it, but I feel so peaceful, like we were really meant to do this.
Why didn't I do this a long time ago? I am having such a great time with my kids - learning together, struggling together, exploring together.
Thanks to all of you for guiding me while I was trying all summer to decide what would fit us best in terms of a curriculum. Charlotte Mason has been such a blessing. What an amazing thing it is to hear a 5YO say "Michelangelo really liked to cut stone better than anything else" or to hear a 9YO say "Pope John Paul II apologized for how the church treated Galileo". THAT is real learning. I never had these experiences as a kid - getting to know people in history in such an intimate way.
This is a fun, exciting journey. So far, that is. I hope it's not a honeymoon phase.

Oh, no...it will continue. It won't be perfect, and it won't always be fun, and your children won't love every single subject.
But you will love them and they will love you and you will know them so very, very well that you'll be able to tell when things aren't working, and, eventually, they'll be able to tell you why. And you will be able to change things so even the not-loved subjects are tolerable, because you can.
And on a beautiful autumn day you might just be able to head outside for some nature study, so you can teach them to skip rocks. Or photograph lizards. Or visit a battlefield and see deer in the woods.
And on a rainy awful day, you'll know they're prepared for a storm, because you've taught them about weather and disaster preparedness...not the school tornado drill stuff, but the knowledge they will be able to use all their lives.
And during Advent your teenager will snuggle with you on the couch a time or two, as you once again read aloud the beloved Tomie dePaola and Jan Brett books he's come to associate with that holy season...and you'll feel like you have given your children something really special to share with their own children one day.
We're on Year Ten...can you tell?

I completely agree with you. We have been homeschooling for a few months and life is just so much more relaxing. I have more responsibilities now, but we aren't rushing kids everywhere early in the morning, dealing with whining and everything else that comes along with school. I am sure things will get harder when I have more kids in my homeschool, but I absolutely love this lifestyle. I'm so happy that you are having a great experience!!!!! Congrats!!!!!

Thanks for the beautiful words ladies. We started officially "schooling" again last week. And after a very long, stormy pregnancy and a hectic summer, things are settling down so beautifully.
We were blessed to have dh home for 12 weeks with the birth of our newest addition and he went back last week.
It seems like this was just what we were meant to do, however, I have also been struggling with feelings of guilt because my oldest dd was hinting about public school.
I was considering and reconsidering and just decided that all the beauties of our daily lives would be lost if I went there and gave into her whim. Of course,after praying to our lady.
Dd is a self starter, not a morning person and doesn't like to be told what to do among other things, and I would loose her gifts and contributions to our family homeschool.
Well, needless to say, this is just what I needed!
