My daughter wouldn't touch it either, but will do it on occaison now that she's 7. I didn't do anything about it, just got her dairy/calcium needs through yogurts and cheese. She drank water or juices, but she also nursed until 27 months.

Have you tried something like Ovaltine? I've also seen ways to make your own chocolate syrups if you want to go with organic ingredients. That way you can determine the amount of sugar added to keep a better balance.

Michaela, my toddler has a dairy intolerance. She will not drink milk or eat cheese. So I wouldn't push it, it may bother his digestion. I was still nursing mine during her second year so I didn't worry about it.

I would give him a good quality yogurt. If he is otherwise healthy and growing, you could just wait till he seems ready for dairy. Usually they seem to outgrow the intolerance.

You can buy orange juice that has both calcium and Vit D in it... I think Minute Maid makes one just for kids. I'm not sure if a 16 month old would like it, but a cup of that in the morning would give a good start on calcium for the day.

Also, some cheeses have a huge amount of calcium. Kraft Deli Deluxe cheese squares have as much calcium as milk or fortified OJ... 300 mg per slice. The slices are not that big; a toddler could gobble one up. Also, some string cheese brands have lots of calcium.

Smoothies are also a nice way to slip in some calcium. Half a banana, some frozen strawberries, half a cup of milk and a pinch of sugar or honey (if needed), and you have a tasty treat. Almond milk also works in smoothies.

we use milk but it's certainly far from a required drink here. Even just ordinary cheddar cheese is nicely high in calcium and cheese is much more a staple than milk. We drink water and juice and only the occational glass of milk.

Thank you! I see I was worried unnecessarily.

He's my first that I'm considering weaning before two years old. He does receive calcium from other foods like cheese and yogurt.

Carrying a sippy cup with cow milk doesn't mean healthy.

I was focusing too hard on what he isn't consuming rather than what he is.

Thank you also for the suggestions of additional sources we haven't tried.

I have always hated milk, and don't feed it to my children either.
We have it on cereal, use it recipes, but it rarely gets drunk as a drink.
I've actually read that milk/dairy is a main factor in gastrointestinal problems in children.
Even my midwife said to me at the last visit that cow's milk is for baby cows, not human babies, lol.
Just another perspective....

My babies have never liked milk either - they throw the sippy cup across the kitchen!

For a while we tried the strawberry Nesquick powder but realized that the red 40 was related to tantrums. Chocolate seems to indulgent.

If I could find the strawberry Horizon milk in a big size at a great price I would buy it. No red 40 on that ingredient list.

I just try not to sweat it and wait until they are older. Yogurt has to suffice for my 16 mo now!
