My oldest is going through a very shy stage. He has real difficulty talking to people he doesn't know well and he is even too shy to make eye contact. How can I gently encourage him to show his real self and be confident in himself? People think that he's in a bad mood the way he hangs his head and clams up when spoken to. Ugh. At home and around close family he is not shy at all (quite the opposite). This is something I've noticed has developed in him over the past year.

Have you ruled out any medical issue? I have a child who became painfully shy and it was actually because she had an undiagnosed medical condition (I guess she felt vulnerable because she didn't feel well, not sure). She was fine with us around the house with us.
