OK, so on the one hand I don't mind that she'd like to have makeup.. but on the other don't want her being overly made up.. but on the third hand with her coloring she doesn't need it.. even has the dark long eyelashes she did NOT get from me 
So I'm thinking.. some of that clear mascara that someone mentioned on the E.L.F. thread.. and a colored lip gloss.. not a heavy lipstick but more than just clear gloss.. and a powder is what I'm thinking.. but then I'm concerned that the powder might need blush to keep from evening out the color in her face too much.
What do you all think? would a powder (with a brush to apply so it can be very light) help give a finished look without a made up look?
It's been quite a while since I've worn much makeup but I was good at it when I did.. learning makeup for theatre helped I think. But I'm not sure what I should be looking for.
I think I can get it as a surprise her skin tone is very close to mine but a bit darker so I should be able to figure that out.

If she has good skin, I'd skip the powder and maybe go for a bronzer. It's not quite a "there" as blush but gives a hint of color.

It's really about applying each product with a light hand. Bronzers do look very natural, when used correctly.
You might want to agree on "every day" and "special occasion" looks - every young lady likes to kick it up a notch for parties and holidays...

so what is correct use on a bronzer.. that's not somethign I'm familiar with.

A lot of what girls are using today are more natural colours, tones. All I know, not much help I'm afraid.

So I looked up how to apply bronzer.. and I get the concept (I did this with the more natural tones of blush) And I read one site and it tells you to blow off the brush to avoid having too much on the brush and no mention of anything else and another site says that you should apply a light layer of powder and tap the brush not blow on it since moisture will cause clumping and streaking.

My mom took me to have a free professional makeover done. They picked out some shades that complemented my natural coloring, but didn't overshadow it. They taught me how to put on the makeup without overdoing it. It was well worth it, and a lovely afternoon out with my mom!

I like ordering from ELF which Suzanne linked to in the other thread. It's inexpensive, but the quality is nice. They frequently have free shipping deals and coupons, so I can order and not spend much at all.
Yes to the clear mascara.
Yes to powder - we don't do bronzers because we're WAY too fair here and almost anything with color/tint looks ridiculous on our skin...so I bought my dd this powder - it's called a booster, but it's really just a light sheer powder you apply with a large brush. It's very forgiving - if you dust on a bit too much, just keep sweeping the brush around to even it out. It provides a light, sheer coverage. Very delicate.
Yes to light lip gloss.
And...yes to blush - I chose something very light and showed her how to apply. She usually chooses not to wear it and the powder I chose is light enough, giving a very natural finish and doesn't cover her naturally rosy cheeks...so it's fine!

If you can find a Mary Kay lady and set up an appointment, they are always very helpful in figuring out colors etc (some can be a bit pushy, but my consultant is a homeschooling mom that is really laid back and accommodating) Right now for a natural look I use a mineral powder and add a light pink/white shimmer blush, it looks really natural, and you could really just use the blush to highlight if you have clear skin.

Okay, here's the link. I really like this for early mornings when I have to be out the door super quick. I dab a little concealer, some mascara, and mineral veil. It kind of gives that black and white movie glamorous glow - lol!

Just for background knowledge, Mary Kay products are animal based, Nutri-Metics are plant based. If your dd has any allergies or sensitivities I urge you to take this into account.
I have reactions to animal products and had a massive reaction to Mary Kay, damaged my skin for weeks (couldn't appear in public) could barely see from puffed up face, tight, raw skin and for years after still broke out with the same symptoms from time to time.

Thanks Erin and Vanessa, I will watch for that.. I'm pretty good at the colors and application myself.. but there's just stuff out there (like the bronzer) that I've never used or something like the clear mascara that wouldn't help my poor short lighter colored lashes but will be all my DD will likely need with her long dark lashes.
I was just looking at old photos of myself when I was wearing makeup all the time.. as well as ones I was dressed up for.. like my senior prom and my wedding.. and while I need to brush up on my skills and knowledge of what to use.. I have no problems with knowing what colors to use and how to use them.

I am very sensitive and can't use all their products, but I haven't had any problems with the mineral powders (which they claim are pure mineral...), including the blushes and eyeshadows... I would be interested if you want to PM me or post her more specifically what you had problems with and where to get the info on what products have animal products in them. And a link to NutriMetics??

That is so fascinating to know about your sensitivities and what worked. I won a complete make-over, so from all the creams, foundations, the works. The next day I was in complete agony, had to lie in bed with cucumbers on my eyes trying to reduce the swelling, cracked skin etc. So I'd guess something I used is something you don't, helpful?? When I contacted the lady, who btw was very high up in Mary Kay, she was the one who told me the products are animal based. Sorry it was eleven years ago so I couldn't tell you more than that.
As for Nutrimetics I found the international contacts which does not include American details, does this mean they are not sold in America?

9th grade I was allowed minimal makeup -- blush, mascara, and colored lip gloss. I started wearing Clinique Black honey and still wear it today. Actually, I think I still wear the same blush.

I am not trying to promote Mary Kay, but when trying the products several years ago, I also had problems. I won a makeover this summer and after trying many things, I had no trouble at all. I am very sensitive, too. I think they may have changed some of their formulations.
Personally, as one with sensitive skin, I started out with Almay and Clinique products and found them very easy to use with no irritation.
