Ladies,
With so many members here giving birth recently or approaching their due dates, I'm curious to know where have you given birth?
My SIL had an underwater birth in Germany while my brother was stationed there. The base hospital was full, so she was sent to a German hospital, where my brother was given a straight back chair in another room and told to sit while his wife was whisked away to a tub.

All 4 were born in a hospital. First was labor which ended in csection. The rest were sections.

All six in the hospital and five of them by the same OB. He even took a part time status at a different hospital (after dh had a job/insurance change) to deliver my last two, bless his heart. No surprise he is Catholic and one of I believe eight children  .

Two have been born in the hospital (one within 10 minutes of arrival) and then the next two at home (by choice, not chance).

5 were born in the hospital:
1 assisted by the emergency doctor
1 assisted by the nurses within 4 minutes of arrival
2 assisted by the actual doctor
1 assisted by the midwife
and last but not least - 1 in the car less than 10 minutes from town.

1 in the hospital birth center (seperate from the hospital but run like the hospital)
1 in the birthing room at my midwife's house (just a bedroom with attached bath.. she couldn't lift her equipment for transport any more so we went to her)
7 at home by choice
all with midwives.. 1 cnm, 1 lay midwife who was also an RN, and the rest licensed/certified midwives
the last 6 all with the same midwife

I voted Combo of the first three.
Dc 1 - Birthing Centre in the grounds of a hospital.
A lovely country cottage where we laboured alone and the staff only came over when time to push. We only saw the staff a few times a day during our stay, we could have called them over if we needed them though.
We had our own kitchen and laundry, dh made his meals, mine were delivered. Had we had children they could have stayed with us. A truly precious babymoon.
DC2- A home birth at home with a midwife. Big sister (2 at time) watched from cot.
Dc3- A home birth with only dh and 2 older siblings (4 &2). I laboured in a birthing pool.
The midwife and attendant (to mind the children) were late. Dh caught the baby. I hemorrhaged and was transferred by ambulance to hospital. Midwife arrived as I left in ambulance.
Dh requested to never put him in that position again.
DC4-9 - All at local hospital.
I'm very happy with the midwives, they are happy to cater to my birthing plan. No painkillers, lots of movement, little monitoring etc. They dim the lights, encourage music etc. The doctor never shows, if I needed him he would but otherwise the midwives rule.
Even for No. 6 (baby dead at 18 wks) I was encouraged to have as little intervention as possible. I was induced and supported, but encouraged to deliver naturally. Very healing emotionally.
I can choose to go home as little as 4 hrs later, although they no longer have the midwives come to visit as they did for some of my children.
Dc10- I'm excited this time as finally they have a midwives clinic in place at the hospital so I'm sharing care with the midwives and my obstetrician (I see him twice, with a midwife). Before I share the ob. with the GP and she is so 'uninspiring.'
Went for my first visit and so great that they already know me.

I guess I could have checked 3 different options, if you count out of the country as a legitimate choice for me.
All 4 births took place in a hospital
in birthing rooms with midwives
in Germany
And my dh was definitely in attendance!

#1 - At a local hospital with all of the 'protocol'. Dh and I were both 19 and given no respect for our wishes.
#2 - in our bedroom,I was on a birthing stool, in an old townhouse.
#3 - in the living room of the first house we owned. We lost heart tones momentarily, so dh was pulling me out of the birthing pool and onto the couch behind me, he was born somewhere in between! LOL!
#4 - the living room floor of this house
#5 - on our bed in this house
#6 - living room floor of this house
#7 - living room floor, in a birthing pool in this house.
#8 - living room floor of this house
#9 - birthing pool, living room floor, this house.
#10 - no time to fill pool, 1.5 hours labor start to finish, living room floor, this house.
#11 - most of my 5 hour labor was spent in the bathtub upstairs, again, no time to fill the pool, so living room floor, this house.
I caught all 10 homebirth babies myself, dh has always been there. (he almost missed the 1.5 hour labor baby b/c he was in the other room trying to fill the pool!!) We have had the same primary midwife for all 10 homebirths, a few apprentices here and there. My midwife is a very important person in our family and we love her dearly!

Oops, sorry - I accidently voted Birth Centre - my curser moved and I didn't realise  . I meant to vote for combo:
One in hospital
Two in hospital with birth centre midwives (Birth centre full both times)
Two at home in a birthing pool in my living room, with my beautiful family surrounding me, my favourite candles lit and lovely classical music. And I got to go to sleep in my own bed afterwards .

My first two were inductions in the hospital. Number 3 was born at home in our bedroom My recovery from my homebirth was so much easier than from my inductions!

First three births were hospital births,...11 years between first two births and the third birth (due to secondary infertility). After our only local hospital began performing abortions, it seemed a conflict of ethics for us to support the same department that was taking life while bringing new life into the world, so the last two were home births
All our births were beautiful and significant in their own ways, mostly because Dh was always right beside me for all our births, which was truly consoling. He had several surgeries in his youth and actually fainted while donating blood in his teens, so initially we weren't sure he could handle being with me during birth, but he was always amazingly helpful and supportive, which made a profound difference when four of our children were born with the same congenital birth defect.
#4 was born at home, in our teeny tiny antique bathtub, at my lay midwife's gentle prompting...I remember repeatedly singing the refrain, "I will praise you Lord, You have rescued me; I will praise You Lord for Your Mercy!" (from a Mass for World Youth Day in Denver, with Pope JPII). I kissed my midwife afterward, thanking her profusely...the difference was truly amazing! Whenever anyone uses the expression, "Were you born in a barn?" we answer, "No, but ds #4 was born in a bathtub!" I also mentioned to dh, in the midst of labour, if we were blessed with any more children, we would have to get a bigger bathtub.
Since water was such a relief for the prior birth, and finances just didn't allow both a new bathtub and a midwife, we set up an inflatable pool in our bedroom for #5...we ended up having a flood from a dislodged hose and the pool collapsed midway through mylabour...we've always joked that maybe he should have been named Noah. Both our home births were very sacred and peaceful birth experiences, but all our births were particularly memorable and special, especially since they brought us the greatest blessings in our lives...each of our dear children!

All four were hospital births.
We are very blessed though that even though the first 3 were inductions (that's a whole other story) we never had to have a c-section and I was able to labor on a birthing ball and have no other medical intervention other than that pitocin drip.
With birth # 4 I finally felt comfortable enough to refuse the induction and went into labor by myself! Our ds was born 40 minutes after I walked through the door and the nurse was so surprised I did it with out pain meds she watched in awe and forgot to take down the exact time of birth:)

All six in hospital. The first three turned into high risk pregnancies, and the last three I had to go to a perinatologist (whom I adored!)
First ds was induced, but no pain meds.
#2-#5 were induced, with epidurals!
#6 decided to test the outside air with his foot. He turned into a c-section.

#1- Hospital "medically managed" vaginal birth
#2- Hospital c/section for fibroid and transverse lie
#3- My best birth- homebirth
#4- Homebirth, harder than #3 because I was having some health problems (unrelated to pregnancy)
#5- Birth center, transport to hospital and NICU for baby
All different experiences! I learned something different with each one and have matured as a mother each time.
