Our oldest daughter, 11yrs, wants an email account. I'm not quite sure. She is a very mature and responsible 11 yr. old. Her two best friends have one so she really thinks she "needs" one too. At what age do you think is appropriate? Thank you!

Missy, all my children.. even the 2 yr old have email accounts. BUT.. that doesn't mean they have private access to them.
I get each a gmail account (it's fun to get stuff from grandma and grandpa and give out your own email address to friends).
But I use the MAIL program to pick up all the mail.. they never log into gmail through the browswer.. mail comes to Windows Mail and MY inbox and then after I've seen everything.. I'll move it to their folder and mark it "unread" and they can check their mail that way.

it's like ummm you use IE (internet explorer) to browse the internet.
this is a program "windows mail" that comes with the whole windows operating system.. and will connect to the internet and you can have it retreive the mail instead of reading it online.
But if you use gmail. You can have your gmail account retrieve the other account emails too. When you're at your gmail account.. upper right corner, click "settings" and then across the box with all the different settings.. general, labels, etc.. there is one that is "forwarding and pop/imap" that will tell you how to set up.. there's some links under the different types for "learn more" that might help you too.

yes, I figure I am the one directly accessing the account so really it's mine even if it's an email addy specific for the child.

forwarding the emails is probably the easiest.. anything that goes to her email can be forwarded to his very simply.

We are fairly strict with this one. We have access to our dd12 email account. she has only this year had one set up.
She only really emails her 2 good homeschool friends. I forward her Holy Heroes emails.
There is no password that she is aware of. Its not internet based, and now its set up, and thefun has warn off, she rarely uses it.
I check her emails, but she is fairly sensible, and knows that if it is used incorrectly, it will be removed- Not that she would.
