There are 2 new shows about them coming up soon.
Discovery Health Channel will be running their newest show on the Duggars,
"Raising 16 Children." Here are the air dates (all times Eastern):
March 15, 2006 at 8:00 pm and 11:00 pm
March 19, 2006 at 3:00 pm
March 26, 2006 at 9:00 pm
March 27, 2006 at 12:00 am
TLC will be running their newest show on the Duggars, "16 Children and
Moving In." Here are the air dates (all times Eastern):
March 11, 2006 at 9:00 pm
March 12, 2006 at 12:00 am
March 13, 2006 at 8:00 pm and 11:00 pm

I caught the "moving in" show on Saturday. What an amazing house! I do wish there had been more emphasis on organization and less on the building process. Even shows like "While You Were Out" and "Clean Sweep" focus more on how to make a space functional. Of course, it helps to start from scratch to build a house suitable to the unique needs of a big family (and it probably doesn't hurt to have cable television to provide designers and furnishings  ), but what can we take away from the Duggars shows and apply in our own homes?

I will say one thing after watching the "Moving In" show...I'm wondering how she's going to find everyone to get them to sit down for school. 
In the first house, I noticed she had them all together at the table...even the littles.
In that huge house, it'll take the whole school timeframe just to find them. 
And don't they now have 8 washers and 2 kitchens? There isn't much I can take away from this family show and apply here within my home...
oh...yes, there was...one important thing! I noticed that Michelle Duggar did look tired. My goodness, she was pregnant than had #16 and was building a new house.  I'd be tired too.  But there was always a twinkle in her eye and a smile on her face and such a pleasant tone in her voice.
Is this the key?
I've just suffered (and my family) from a bad week of PMSing. This is what I'm determined to take, possess, and apply within my own home.

We watched the show as a family. My children are now convinced they need a tunnel/slide from their second floor bedroom down to the playroom. What can we learn from the Duggar's? Well, my 6 yo told me that if I had 16 children I would never have to do any of the housework, I could "play on the computer and read books all day."
I was impressed with how all the children looked. From what I've heard from others, it wasn't just for the TV show. Everyone was dressed nicely-dresses for the girls and khakis/collared shirts for the boys. My children tend to dress like, well, like we shop at Goodwill (which we do!) I make sure they are dressed appropriately for the weather-but after that I leave it up to them.
I liked the central vac-wet and dry. I also liked the fact that it appeared to be a 7 yo boy in charge of mopping/cleaning the great room floor!! How does Michelle train the children-and train them to work with a smile on their face?? And what curriculum do they use? I haven't heard of "wisdom books".

We don't have TV but someone taped it for me, so hopefully I'll get to see it.
I was guessing that this show would be more for fun than a real resource. What I get from watching the Duggars is the example of gentleness and patience that Michelle Duggar is.

I was struck by the fact that Michelle doesn't spend any time ferrying children to athletics or dance. Her older children aren't gone in the afternoons pursuing extracurriculars--they are at home. And so, they are a help to her, not an additional scheduling strain. My impression based on this show and the other that aired last year is that they don't do co-ops and such either. She is a keeper at home who is truly home!The question is whether this is actually a benefit or not.Is the family too insular?
I also couldn't help but wonder how she manages to maintain such a high level of efficiency. In the same amount of child-bearing time, she has borne twice the number of children I have (and I think I have a lot by most any other standard
) . I've done nothing for the past ten weeks, unless you count sleeping and vomiting. Literally. For the first few weeks, the children followed the normal lesson/chore pattern admirably. But, I am saddened to admit, the past few weeks have been humbling to say the least. They have figured out that when I'm down, I'm not getting up anytime soon and they fritter about, making messes  . My eldest, who is a huge help, is often gone. He has two jobs and is taking three classes. And when he's helping me, it's usually in the form of running errands or driving carpools. None of this seems very Duggar-ish .

So yes, I'd like more "practical"! I'd particularly love to see how they lived out their days in the small house they used to own. I feel like we are outgrowing our 1100 sq. ft. with six people (and very little storage). What did they own? How many clothes per person? How many toys? Where did they PUT it all?

I think part of it is just the temperment of their children. (I have to do a lot of work to manage these hot blooded Scots I have! ) Also her husband is home much of the time. Another difference is many girls at the top of the ladder.

There was a show on Discovery Health a few months ago, taped when they only had 14 kids. It showed a bit more of the social aspect of their lives. They "home church" so get together with other large homeschooling families on Sundays for the entire day. That was one of the reasons for the huge house and the extra cafeteria style kitchen-so when it's their turn to host church there would be room to seat and feed everyone. The show also showed them at a church ice-skating event-everybody in the family out on the ice. And I think they all take violin lessons. But nothing individual as far as lessons or sports. That was one of my husband's comments-that the kids really couldn't become individuals with their own unique passions and interests until they were adults. I don't know if I agree-I really haven't had much time to think about it. It would be easier if we were all home together, all day, every day. But there is alot of good stuff "out there". Are they too insular? Maybe.

This is a hot topic! Three replies while I was composing my response to Elizabeth's post!! I want a close look at Michelle's schedule for everyone that was posted on the wall.
Oh, and remember at the end when they put the new baby in her crib and said good-night? The baby was smiling and wide awake. Dh said "Now I know this is TV. There is no way that baby is ready to go to sleep!"

I went Googling and only found a Buddist program. I doubt that's it.
So I typed in "wisdom homeschool curriculum" and found this... I've perused the site before...Heart of Wisdom. It does involve a Charlotte Mason angle so I think the family leans towards that...especially since they thought building the house was such a good learning opportunity.
There's a hs message board there that might mention the Duggars using their curriculum. I'm not sure though; I haven't checked it out.

Neat! Some interesting things I'm finding. I am looking over the message board and saw the Homemaking Forums. The recipes section says no pork or shellfish recipes, please. Interesting....

I didn't watch the show and know just a little about their family, but it just seems obvious to me that they are a very spiritual family and God is providing all that they need. Too simple? I don't think so. The inspirational part to me is the fact they've allowed the rest of the country/world, both those who would be in total admiration and those who think they are crazy, a glimpse into their lives!

Their website says that they live debt free.  This made me think that they would probably Home Birth. (Only a guess.) Our last baby cost $3,000 out of pocket!  Traventine showers are expensive I guess!
The previous house they were in was a rental. Perhaps that helped them save for the new house. I would have to watch again (we recorded it for the kids) but I think they said the kitchen appliances only cost $10,000?! They said they were worth $100,000 +! That's some smart shopping!

I don't think medical insurance qualifies as debt. They definitely have hospital births, icnluding at least one c-section.They bought the kitchen appliances at auction. They saved a great deal of money building the house themselves. They also have benefitted from TLC and Discovery Channels.TLC paid for the finishing/designer touches, some furnitiure, and donated the grand piano.Even the paint was donated. Did you notice it was Behr paint? That's Home Depot product placement.
I guess I wasn't really trying to get at the money end of things as much as I was wanting to understand the mechanics of it all. Sure, it's a big house and it helps to have four washers and four dryers, but the laundry system is important too and so is the chore system, the shopping system, the system for getting everyone to the doctor and dentist and orthodontist, the mechanics of making sure that no one is off making mischief...
I know God provides, but I don't think that Michelle just sits still in that lovely great room all day and assumes all will be well.
