Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are trying to find a site to host a 75th birthday celebration for my father-in-law. As many of these things do, this is becoming a mountain of a molehill because of the difficulty some have on choosing a location. There is some interest in gathering at a Garden of some sort where we would spend the day, be free to roam around and look at displays, kids could have more freedom to play, have a picnic, etc. We did something similar at Longwood Gardens in PA a few years ago, and everyone has fond memories of that day. However, not fond enough to go back there, I guess.

We are looking for such a place outside of the DC metropolitan area, Va or Md side. We are in Charlottesville, my husband's parents and sister's family are in Md. We tend to travel there more, so Md would probably be more ideal, but either would work. Does anyone have a suggestion? I was told by the person doing the planning that her searches are not turning up much of anything, but I know sometimes parks and picnic hot spots can be diamonds in the ruff and may not be listed as actual formal gardens but may be just as nice.

Oh, our group is small, only a dozen of us.

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

Sarah

It's probably a bit further from the DC metro area than you are thinking, but Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis, MD is lovely with lots of room to roam, playgrounds, hiking trails, formal gardens and picnic pavilions.

It is a lovely place! (Sara, do you live near me???? I am not terribly far from QW.)

I was trying to think of cool places in Maryland. Emmitsburg leaps to mind. There aren't really gardens at the shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, but it is a beautiful area. There is a Grotto, too.

You can do the state park thing at Catoctin Mountain Park...and the Cozy Restaurant in Thurmont is famous (I have never eaten there, but our pastor loves it!).

Nancy-

I don't think I'm too far from you. We are in the Bel Air area now, but we lived in Annapolis from 1999-2005.

No, you're not too far - maybe 40 - 45 minutes. I'm in AA County.
