Thursday night we had the ceremony for the Webelos to become Boy Scouts.
DS earned his Arrow of Light (the only award from cub scouts that can be worn on the boy scout uniform), all of his Compass points and Super Achiever.
All the boys that moved up earned their Arrow of Light.. there was 9.. but DS and one other were the only ones that got all their Compass points and Super Acheiver.
so I've been spending time investigating where to find information on the different things now.. and have links for merit badges and rank requirements, and I found bunches of emblems for ideas for him for patrol names and such..
I need a box to store all the cubscout things in, and I told DS I would help him remove all the cubscouts things and get his shirt set for boy scouts.. but after that he has to be the one to do it  (obviously with help to start but making it his job and he can come ask for help type of thing).
Next up.. getting the boy ready for camping. He has a new backpack so we'll need to work together on how to best pack it that HE can maintain

yay!!! welcome to the fold! congrats to your ds!!
one great tip we got from the mom of a recent eagle scout -- keep a scrapbook of all their merit badges, letters they receive congratulating them on their achievements, records of their accomplishments, etc. she and her son used baseball card albums and pages to keep all the merit badge cards in one place. it was quite impressive when she brought out that huge binder at one of the meetings.

Congratulations!
My son is a Web I, but he is almost done with the Arrow of Light. We are seriously thinking about which troop he should bridge to. Unfortunately, he won't get Super Achiever --- there is no way he can do Aquanaut in the next year. (The downside of a severely disabled scout is that he can't do some things.)
I like meritbadge.org better than meritbadge.com; it has tons of info and nice worksheets and all. (It's good for Cub Scouts as well. I have used that site with Webelo Activity badges.)

What sort of ceremony did your son have? Our Cubmaster wants to have actual flaming arrows, but I am not certain about the best way to do that.
I know that some boys make or decorate special arrows.

We had a ceremony (seven years ago...) with a candelabra with one candle for each Webelo. I painted a large Arrow of Light patch on cardboard and we placed that in front of the candelabra.
Special arrows sound cool...perhaps not flaming ones, though.
And - do keep all the blue cards, photos, etc. in one place. You can certainly document your merit badges in other ways for your Eagle Scout application, but it's much easier to just have all the blue cards there and make copies for the application package.
Take lots of photos. You'll treasure them.

Thanks Ladies.. I also appreciate the recommendations on websites. I'm finding that the official website is great IF you find the links to what you want elsewhere and save the direct link
But this one boyscouttrail.com has been VERY helpful.. I can often find things there easily.. and it's usually one of the top hits when I do a full websearch. I found it originally looking for the placement of all the emblems and such on the uniform.. it has both boy scouts and cubscouts info.
Deborah, they have a nice wooden arrow with 3 lights on top for the 3 parts of the Scout Oath (Duty to God and Country, Duty to Others, Duty to Self) pointing to the bridge for the cross over.
They recieved their Arrow of Light Award from the CubMaster, then shook the first boy scout's hand who pointed them past the arrow to the bridge they cross over to meet two more scouts and recieve their handbook and class B uniform tee shirt and then shake hands with the ScoutMasters.

I always take photos! I usually carry a camera with me in my purse, just in case.... I have to document education for a special needs child so I always, always take pictures. (His hsing scrapbook is chock full of pictures of Cub Scout activities.)
Jodie, using those baseball card pages is a great way to keep all those little cards organized. (My husband and I have our own pages as well to keep track of the training we've done.) It's also a good idea if your son makes Eagle Scout. We were warned that BSA deletes all the records of rank achievements after three years, and those cards are your proof that, yes, he did do all that stuff he had to do to make each rank.
Hhhmmmm. I hadn't thought to make just a scout scrapbook. That is not a bad idea. I'll just make two copies of the pictures.....
Okay, we shall do it! I'll just get another scrapbook.
My son will actually be able to earn AoL in the summer, but we have formally requested permission to stay until the next Blue and Gold. He is upset over the idea of not having all his Cub Scout friends with him when he bridges. (They won't all go to the same troop; a couple of the parents want to avoid having their sons go to the same troop as one of the other boys.)
Anyone planning to base their son's learning around merit badges? I have hears of hsers doing that, but I don't know any personally.

I don't know about basing their learning around it.. but certainly it makes sense to me to coordinate.. and it can go both ways.. either taking something you're learning and doing merit badges that relate.. or taking merit badges you're working on and using that to direct your school.
Just last night I was looking through a book I've recently gotten on Lewis and Clark and it was talking about having the men break into 7 "messes" for meals in camp. And I thought.. neat that's rather like the Troop breaking into Patrols

Congratulations! There are so many wonderful opportunities in Boy Scouting.
By the time he makes Eagle, you won't even recognize that Webelo!
Each time there was a rank advancement, our troop gave a mothers pin to mark the passage. You can get them at the Scout Store. There are very precious to me.
Also, our public library has circulating copies of all the Merit Badge books - nice to not have to buy them, and also to peruse in figuring out what you want to work on.

Long ago I saw a website about homeschooling via merit badges.
We have certainly integrated certain merit badges (Citizenship in the Nation, for ex.) into our curriculum over the years. There are many science merit badges, and Personal Fitness can be worth a quarter or so of P.E. at the high school level. Hiking, cycling and swimming can also count for P.E., among others.
And then there are academic merit badges - Reading, Scholarship...
...and, IMHO, the most useful MB of all, Personal Management - it's planning, scheduling, and personal finance put together. (Family Life is good, too, but Personal Management is the one badge I think is most useful for adult life.)

Yup. Starting soon. We had planned to do this with 13-yo but then I got pregnant, we traveled, etc. and I just didn't have the energy to pursue it, so just let him earn whatever merit badges he wanted to earn with dad's help.
11-yo will hopefully be different. Let's try to share some of our merit badge curriculum plans/successes here!

Well this was neat.. the Scout Master in charge of the new Scouts gave each boy a folder with some baseball card holders and some dividers and a camping log.. nothing expensive.. but each boy has SOMETHING to keep their merit badges and logs and such in.
Of course my son is now begging for a different color (than white) folder for it all.. I may indulge him and be able to at least give the folder back to the scoutmaster for someone else.
