Since we're talking about skirts again (I love those discussions, btw), we might as well talk about swim suits.

The thing is- I make my dc wear very modest suits. My ds wears a rashguard with sleeves to the elbows, and dd wears the same kind of top with a skirted bottom. This is both for sun protection and to help teach them that modesty is important.

So... that leaves me stuck. I like a lot of the pretty, modest swimsuits at Lands End, but then I will just have to cover up the top with a rash guard. I don't really feel like spending $45 for a top that no one is ever going to see, you know? And if I don't wear a rashguard, the kids notice. But I want to, anyway, both for sun protection (we spend hours at the pool and beach) and because I don't feel like everyone needs to see every square inch of me.

I found this new promising company: hydrochic , and I love their skorts with the biker shorts under that cover up most of the thighs... and then they have cute swim shirts with built in swim bras. But each piece runs around $75 , so that would run around $150 for one suit!
I am fainting.

I read an article recently about getting creative with swimwear to be modest... along the lines of wearing UV protective work out shirts and bottoms over a cheap suit. Sounds good... but all this takes time to piece together. Bathing suit shopping in general...

I have noticed that the swimming instructors at our pool wear (some of them) full protection suits... long sleeves and down to the ankles. But I don't really want to look like Aquaman....

It's almost swimsuit season....HELP!!!!

I have noticed more skorts and swim shorts this year...dd is all about the swim shorts!

I think you have to ask yourself how many hours you'll wear the HydroChic items (they are very cool, btw) and then divide price by hours. You will find you aren't spending all that much.

You could buy a HydroChic top (then you wouldn't need a bathing suit top) and get less expensive shorts or a skort from somewhere else, too. That would probably bring the price down a bit.

I got a shortjohn for about $50 at swimoutlet.com think bike shorts on a racing suit but all one piece.

I LOVE IT. I wear a tee over it when out of the water.. but it's comfortable to really swim in (like swimming laps) and best of all covers me where I most needed it to feel comfortable in a swimsuit (top of my legs )

And of course now I'm pregnant and it won't fit me this summer

But I don't think I'm out in the sun and water as much as some of you. But I would suggest going to swimoutlet.com often the suits are discounted just because they're last year's colors or patterns.. But it really helps me outfit my swim team kids for less.

For my kids.. I get racing suits.. they stay up and they stay down.. which on my thin children is a wonderful accomplishment. And then the rule is when you're out of the water you cover up with something, boys generally pull loose sports shorts over the jammers and a tee.. girls will use shorts and a tee or a dress they can slip on over their heads.

The last few years they have had this line of tank suits at JCPenney called Longitude (I think) and I love them. They have extra length in the torso, so they don't pull down at the top or up at the bottom, and are quite comfortable. I think I only paid around $35 and mine has held up well over the last couple of years. I'd like to get a rash guard to go over it, just haven't been ready to buy one yet, and I also bought swim fabric to make a simple skirt but I haven't done that yet either. Guess I'd better get going so that I'm ready for this summer!

A friend shared this link with me a little while ago; I've been taking a look at these Swim Modest swimsuits for my oldest daughter. She likes them a lot.

Jen-

I have looked at that site- the suits are very, very cute. I can't tell if the material has UV protection, though, which I absolutely need. I might e-mail and check.

In the meantime... off to Penny's to check their selection.

We do Target for swimsuits. Basic tank suit, usually Speedo brand, then add microfiber exercise shirt and skort. The tank provides support and the microfiber coverage. For my dd each set comes to about $35, for me about $50. They have cute patterns for girls on the microfiber, and fairly flattering ones for adults. My dd has gotten 2 years from hers, and they are just needing replacing, mine is 3 years old. We are at the pool at least weekly in the winter and 2-3 times a week in the summer.

I am headed there tomorrow. I know the Champion microfiber stuff has some UV protection, but I can't find a place that tells me how much. I'd say I'm in the sun (beach or pool) 5 days a week for around 2 hours all summer. The UV protection on suits only lasts for so many washings.
I've had the same two suits for 5 years, but I keep current on new rash guards for UV protection. Now, though, one of the suits, which is skirted, has the skirt about 5 inches longer in front than the back when it's wet from little hands tugging on it for so many years.    It must be replaced....

What about something like this over a more modest tank suit?

Melinda, I don't know about the UV rating. My kids inherited my father-in-law's skin tone, and don't burn, ever, so UV is not something I stress over. We use Coppertone Sport sunscreen applied in the morning after breakfast and go about our day in the summer. By August, my kids are "nut berry brown" as my grandmother calls it

I can only fit into a Speedo because they come in a nice long fit in the kind of suit useful for swimming laps. I just pair it with a pair of shorts that can go in the water and it is pretty modest at that point. (I wear the shorts for sports as well...)

Can I just say how nice it is to be on a board where the topic "It's almost swimsuit season..." *doesn't* refer to getting your body in shape to show off?

My oldest daughter at home has given me another sight to look at besides the one Jen posted about.

Here it is: OH WAIT!!! Before you look at it....... LET ME WARN YOU ABOUT THE PRICE!!! IT IS VERY HIGH! OH and I hope it is NOT made in China! Surely not, but I haven't checked on that yet. I told my dd that I could not pay that price, but I offered to give her what I would have to pay at say Target for a suit and she bought the suit with money she earns from teaching piano lessons plus the $20 I gave her.

The sight lets you build your own suit and has matching, yet stylish skirts.
God bless,

so.. are there any decent maternity suits out there? I was thinking maybe I could find a tankini type with the bike short type option for bottoms.. but maternity suits don't seem to have those.. I'm still looking and certainly haven't looked everywhere.. just when place after place is apparently more concerned with moving the material from the top to the tummy.. or not covering either.. and only have standard bikini legs.. no shorts.. I'm not real fond of the skirted ones.. much prefer tight and stay in place and cover what I want covered to ballooning and floating in the water and not covering where I want it.

I had to resort to Ebay last time I was pregnant. I had to look for about a month, but then I did find one that was just what I wanted.

oh lookie lookie.. I changed my search terms and look what I found!!

ohanaswimwear.com

Not a lot of choices but some very decent suits.. including one maternity tankini with a reasonable top and SHORTS on the bottom!!

And the prices for what the suits are.. are GREAT!

Here is directory that list some places for modest swimsuits.

These styles are my favoite, but not cheap (you need to buy bottoms and tops seperately).
