My 14mo ds is really, really scared of the bath tub. He has always been this way. We've dealt with this until now by just not bathing him very often. The times we have bathed him we've tried showers with me, showers with dh, baths with each of us, and a bath in the sink. He shrieks as if we're throwing him on hot coals no matter what. This afternoon I tried putting him in a bathing suit and offering a bucket of water and pouring cups in an otherwise empty tub. Given that it is 90 degrees here and he loves liquids I thought it might do the trick. No luck. Now that summer is here and he's getting mobile he really needs frequent baths. Any ideas?

Stand him on a towel (doesn't have to be in a tub) and jsut use a very wet washcloth to wash him down? Plain water will get off most everything so you don't have to soap him and rinse him either.
Do a buzz cut for the summer and you can even wash his hair that way.

oh and I was going to say.. give him lots of opportunities this summer for him to approach the water in his own way and maybe you can get him past that.

I don't remember exactly when, but my ds3 went through that phase. SCREAMED bloody murder if I even offered to let him touch the soap suds on the top of the mop bucket.
We did do the Dad shower thing, and that sort of transitioned him, and now he's fine. That's all I can remember doing--if he needed a shower, letting Dad hold him and bathe him. Eventually, he also wanted to be in the tub with his two brothers, too.
I wish there was a trick I learned, but I'm actually relieved that someone else has experienced this phenomenon. It was so weird!

He hated the beach last year, too. He stayed huddled against my chest until the last couple times we went when he would sit on my lap and look at the water.
He was born in the bathtub! But then we both had a little shock since it was January in Minnesota and the hot water ran out. I sometimes wonder if he has post-traumatic stress from birth. My other two kids have been bath fanatics since they were babies.

What about noise? water can be noisy.. especially in a bathroom for instance.. and the beach is definately "noisy".
My 3 yr old last year when she was 2 HATED the sprinkler. Not the water, not getting wet.. I think it was a control issue there though being 2 and all

Maybe it is the size that is intimidating? Do you have him just sitting in the tub or in some sort of seat? We use a laundry basket as a bath seat. It gives them something to hang on to. Also, is it a temperature thing? I know my baby would scream during her entire bath and then one day I made the water cool and she has been fine since. It was in the winter so I would have thought she would have wanted something warmer (not hot, just warm). But I have also recently realized that she wasn't sleeping well at night because she was too warm (she was in a diaper and t-shirt. The last 2 nights she has been just in a diaper, no covers with a fan blowing on her and she has slept great. It is hard to figure out what temp is comfortable for a child...at least that has been my experience.

We actually bought some foam cleanser to use for "dry" washing. We use it for a different reason, but it works great - you rub the foam in and then use a damp washcloth to clean off. I first found out about it in an elderly care ward, but I have since seen it sold specifically for babies. It would also be great for travel, I think - so pretty multi-purpose.
