Our 18-month-old's hair is always getting in her eyes. We got her some headbands, but she won't keep them on her head. I don't want to take the chance on clips that might be choking hazards. Is there any other way to avoid a first haircut? She seems so little for it... I don't know why it seems like it would feel like a bittersweet milestone. How old was your child at his/her first haircut?
Her hair is definitely wavier and seems sort of wispier than the thick straight hair her two brothers have -- it curls up down by her neck, and her bangs which keep getting in her eyes are quite wavy. We couldn't just cut thick straight bangs down near her eyebrows because her hair isn't that way.

It all depends.. one son who's hair on the top of his head grows straight forward and was born with more than some had his first trim at about 3.5 months.. to keep the hair out of his eyes.
I've got a little guy now who had very little hair and his hair is curly and it's just now at 20 months long enough that I'm thinking a cut is in order.. it's long enough the curls are messy and not cute anymore.
On bitty little girls.. I tend to do pony tails (little ones to each side or bigger ones.. one or two.. one pulling the front back but the back down) rather than clips or headbands.
And the pulling things out tends to be a fairly short stage.. so if you don't really want her hair cut.. just keep keeping on and she'll get past it before too long and will start keeping things in her hair.

My 13-month-old daughter is in the pulling-things-out stage. After struggling for a bit with barrettes, we have been putting her front hair into a little side ponytail with one of those very small rubber bands. They are too small for her to take out easily, and she learned pretty quickly to leave them alone. I take it out for naps and bedtime (I'm worried about choking), and her long bangs don't seem to bother her at all while sleeping.
I remember this stage with my older daughter too. Jodie is right--the phase is pretty short-lived, and then they get used to (and even like) having their hair up. In my older daughter's case, we did trim her bangs a couple of times (she had a big mohawk that fell toward the front during her first year! ), but when she was a little over a year, we just left it alone. She got used to it very quickly and we haven't cut it since (she's now 3.5).

My oldest had her first haircut at about a year. My second had her first haircut at about 2 1/2. With my second I didn't have bangs cut because it just didn't seem right for her hair. I tried clips but they were a disaster. They always came out (helped by little hands, of course!) and were lost. Now I pull the hair out of her eyes and put it in a pony tail. She leaves it alone for the most part and it is so cute!

My oldest dd had her first haircut at 4 months. She was born with tons of dark straight hair. It grew right into her eyes and this was the only solution as anything I put in it to hold it slipped right out. I think by 18mo she had it cut into a cute little bob. They kind of need them when they need them!

We gave our daughter her first haircut around 18 or 20 months. Really, we just trimmed her bangs because it was easy and made her hair look a lot tidier. Too bad that won't work for your little one!
I am bad about the haircut thing- with my boys as soon as it hung over their ears we got out the buzzer and shaved them. I think our first son was only 3 or 4 months old... I know he couldn't sit up yet, anyway.
He didn't like the clippers but it was quick and painless.

Wow, I didn't realize so many kids got their hair cut so much younger than she is. Someone we know said her daughter needed her first haircut at 1 month. I guess 18 months is not really so young after all and I should get over my sentimentality about it. We do home haircuts most of the time except for mine, although I always figured for a girl we'd get professional ones. Probably not just for a trim of bangs though. Oh well, if the bangs themselves don't look great, she's still going to be the cute little girl she is... and they already don't look great without the cut!

If you don't feel comfy.. go ahead and pay for someone to do that first sorting out and trimming the bangs.. after that it'll be easy for you to keep up on yourself.
I had to when my oldest decided to cut her own hair.. I just had no clue how to get it to fram her face nicely with it all cut off to chin length.

Our son was 5 and a half YEARS old for his first hair cut! DD was abou 2 and a 1/4. She still won't keep anything in her hair, and can't wear headbands as her head is not symmetrical so her eyes are out of alignment and head bands won't stay on. So as soon as her hair started growing I cut it. It is bitter sweet, but I saved little locks of their hair, and that made it special.

My oldest was 3. I wanted to grow her hair long, and she was born bald bald bald. hehe. When she was 3, she took a pair of scissors to her own head, and so we had to get a short, layered cut to hide the damage until it grew back out. It ended up being a good thing. She still had very fine, wispy hair with lots of new growth still coming in, so we kept it at a bob until she was seven or so and it thickened up so much better that way. My son was 2 or so. He was also a bald baby. My current toddler, a girl, has hair long enough to be in her eyes, she was born with more hair than the others, but I'm not sure what I want to do with it, so I do nothing, lol. I do put things in it, but they fall out pretty quickly.

I cut 1st dds at about 6 or 9 mo because it was so badly uneven. Both dss I did at 2 or 3 mos because they had LOTS of hair and it was long in back and looked funny. Younger dd hasn't has any hair cut, and don't know if she will for a very long time, hers natyurally lays nicely. Isn't it interesting how each little one is so very different?
I have heard, and found it to be true with oldest dd that if you cut the curls in the back you'll loose them unless they are really strong curls everywhere. I cut dds hair to get rid of some of the frizzies and her sdorable curls were all gone, and she never go them back. Just a thought to avoid cutting the curls in back if you'd like them to stay.

Well, my husband (the one with the coordination) cut her bangs today. Doesn't look bad. Actually seems to bring out the curls in the back even more :)
