As the youngest child, my five year has no need for more toys. We just pull out ones I hd in storage and suddenly he has "new" toys!
So for Christmas, my 10 yod and I are going to make him a dress up trunk. I have few things already but need more ideas. Please!
So far:
sword, shield, and tunic for a knight,
priest vestments
superman cape
a few random hats
I would love specific ideas, that can be done for not much money. I have 2 tons of fabric to use, and a good friend that works at the SVD resale to spot goodies for me!

fireman.. a hat but the suit can be made from yellow/tan fabric with red or lime green trim for the reflective stripes..
animals are fun.. a black hoodie sweatshirt with ears on the hood and a tail attached to the back makes a very passible cat for instance.

I'm considering getting my two boys lassos and cowboy hats. They already love tying any rope-like object, so maybe a lasso would be fun.

We are very blessed to have a wonderful dress up collection and most have come from garage sales and op shops.
I'll list the outfits the boys wear, I can list more if anyone else needs ideas for girls.
Go searching for various vests, (the adult ones are fine)
I've managed to find a couple of clown outfits, but perhaps you could pull a few outfits together to be the 'clown outfit'
A policeman's shirt (my bil donated there)
A couple of karate outfits.
A 'trench' coat, that looks like Inspector Gadget or a detective.This one fits my big boys (14 and 12)
A khaki shirt that has various roles.
A fireman's vest.
A pair of bright fluro pants that look like a Bushfire outfit or for a few other service industries. That one fits my dd14.
A few saints outfits.
And they all have Ranger's Apprentice Cloaks from the 16 yr old down to the 3 yr old.
We also have a few 'props' in the cupboard, Lightsabers, swords and the like.
My friend's boys have pirate outfits.
I also have metres of chiffon and other play cloth material picked up at garage sales. Although my boys don't tend to play with them.

Dress up is the thing here! Just as a quick funny side to this topic: My 18 yo ds has loved to dress up in costume since he could put his own costumes on. I used to scold and tell him when he put off school work to play dress up that no one was going to pay him to play in life! So, fast forward to present day, I'm driving him to work. He is a paid reenactor and he's decked out in an American Indian costume, war paint, real tomahawk, moccasins he made himself and a bunch of other authentic stuff and he turns to me and says, "Hey, Mom! You said no one would pay me to play!!"  
Pirate stuff:
Cutless, eye patch, fake hoop earrings, red handkerchief for the head
Solider stuff:
Confederate/Yankee hats, muskets, powder horn, a Navy Army surplus store is a boys paradise BTW, bandages for the wounded,
Indian stuff:
Moccasins, rubber tomahawks, Indian chief headdress, feathers to make their own head dresses,
I buy the Walmart face paint after Halloween for them to use all year. They make clown faces, fake wounds, soldier camouflage paint, whatever!
Animal costumes
Davy Crockett coon skin hats, every boy must have one of those!
Zorro's black hat and black cape
Cowboy boots
My little boys have these jean vests they wear all the time, the look like Pioneer boys.
Canteens, bugle for roll call
I could go on, we have all sorts of costumes in this house! My 18 yo just made a great costume for his 10 year old brother this past Halloween. He made a complete soldier of Gondor outfit (LOTR), my 10 yo practically lived in that costume for weeks!

Don't forget any sports attire ... my youngest got pads and a jersey from an older cousin and LOVES to wear those. Caps, helmets, etc are great fun.
After Halloween last year I got him a Jeff Gordon costume from Target that was 90% OFF! He wears that all the time!

How about just a bunch of different belts. My boys use those for all sorts of things, besides holding pants up! Also cowboy boots (did someone already say that one?). Fun!!!!

~Bandanas and manly scarves are very versatile...they can serve multi-duty for cowboys, pirates, middle-eastern headgear, etc.
~I second the idea of vests and belts, as well as child size suit coats, neckties and bow ties....the gaudier the better!
~Women's belts are a surprisingly great source for creating military-style or ancient paraphenalia...leather with lots of metal grommets and fancy metal belts are the best...they can be cut apart and used for holsters, grips on wooden shields, parts for homemade weapons, Roman necklaces, saints costumes, etc.
~We've found some really great dress-up and costume items at garage sales and Goodwill...for mere pennies you can find some fantastic, inexpensive dress-up items.
~Lots and lots of hats here...straw safari hat, Russian-style fur and leather hat, black beret, Aussie style camouflage...we always look for unique, unconventional items wherever we go.
~We have loads of camouflage clothing and a child-size aviator jacket with patches all over that has always been a favorite here...all found at Goodwill.
~Sheriff's badges, military medals, pocket watch, chains and jewels (some to wear, some for treasure)

Servant- Your guys sound just like my boys! Maybe a combo of being homeschooled all their lives and have the freedom to dress up at home (they dress up all day, someone is always in costume around here  ) has made them fearless in wearing in public what they like. My boys are really into a fedora kick right now! One has a Frank Sinatra style fedora, my 14yo wears an Indiana Jones type, and my 10yo wears a Fred Mertz type of hat! I wouldn't have had the nerve to wear a style like that as a kid. The elderly folks at Mass are just tickled to see them every Sunday and one gentleman has offered his fedora collection to them!

Maddie my 15 yos is on a fedora kick also!
He has been study Ancient Greece the past few weeks, and so had to do his school work in a toga! Last week was Sparta, so daily dress also included a round shield and a sword!

My 9 year old is enamored of fedoras as well. He has informed us that when he wears it he is "fedorable." We thought that quite clever and it makes me  because of course he is quite "fedorable" in it.

My 18 nd 14 yo will just love me calling them fedorable!!
That is too cute. Fedora's are such a gentleman's hat, I love seeing the boys in them.
