Any tips? I have an 18th-month-old boy who's still not very verbal, and am seven weeks pregnant. I'm not as sick as I was last time, thank heaven, but I'm still throwing up in the mornings, and movement makes me dizzy and nauseous.
Any ideas for morning child-distracting, explaining (very difficult as he doesn't have much word comprehension), and general survival? I've found eating or drinking anything before I'm feeling better just makes me sick for longer, so crackers/tea/ginger are out. My husband leaves for work just before Nathaniel gets up, so I'm alone.

What's your opinion of TV? I have been in the position a few times and found an hour of VeggieTales or whatever in morning was a life saver (mine and the toddler's!)
Do you have biggers that can help? Or a older child that you know that you could "hire" for a couple of hours a morning? I had one neighbor girl that helped me during a pregnancy. I gave her $10 per week and taught her to sew.
I hope you get throuh this as well as possible.

I posted some time back about things that help me. I'm not at a computer or I'd look it up for you. I'll try to link it later.
I get hmg with every pregnancy.
lots of sympathy.

Also, don't under-estimate how much he understands just because he may not be talking very much. I know my 15-month-old understands way more than she can express. So, you could try reading books with him. Toys like blocks or stacking boxes...building up and knocking down involves little movement but lots of fun. My little one already enjoys playing with cars and trucks, too.
As for the morning sickness, you might make sure that you don't take your prenatal vitamin on an empty stomach or at bedtime, or eating a high-protein meal before bedtime, or forcing yourself up mid-way through the night for a snack to try to head off the nausea before it starts.

Sigh. My little guy wakes up wanting to run, and our DVD player isn't working. We've been doing a lot of reading, but he's very energetic in the mornings, and wants Mama to come play chase and tag.
I might ask my mother to come a few mornings a week. We live in a very well-off neighbourhood where most of the mothers go back to work before a year- lots and lots of nannies, and older kids at summer camp. We don't know many people with older kids. I'll talk to my husband and see if he can think of anyone suitable.
I guess going to sleep for three months isn't an option? ;)

Hi Kyra,
I'm sorry I don't have much advice or help . . . but I do have sympathy. I just went thru this myself and there seems to be no easy way.
And I do second what Barbara said about them understanding more than you think they might! Just keep explaining to him -- you never know. And it's good for him to learn that Mommy isn't all his all the time -- hard, yes, but part of life -- esp. since there'll be a baby coming soon enough! Just think of it that way.
God bless and good luck. This too shall pass.

Would he stay in his crib and play or read books even for a short period? I pull out toys my almost 2 year old doesn't play with often and can put them in her crib and sometimes I get quite a stretch of time...enough to shower or make dinner but for you, it could be just rest. I know that's only minutes out of the day but just a little tidbit.
If your mother would help you at this time, that would seem to be the most tremendous blessing of all.
Surely he still naps? And hopefully you nap while he does. I know as moms we use so much of that baby/toddler nap time to get "stuff done" around the house but right now you need that rest. You're getting LOADS of stuff done "inside"...growing arms and legs and a heart and a brain....
