With 4 little boys running around we need to install baby gates at my parent's house. I don't know how we've gotten away 7 years without them.

They have odd configurations though at the bottom of the stais with a wall (with big moulding pieces) and irregularly shaped banisters on the opposite side. The top of the stairs have the irregularly shaped banisters again on BOTH sides. Any suggestions? Thanks!

We had to build a frame for the gates out of 2 by 4s and attach it to the wall and spindle banister. It's not pretty, maybe you could make it so?, but safety first and it was at our own house. I don't know how your parents would like this in their home.

I don't have a clear picture in my head of what you need, but one way to circumvent the problem of oddly shaped staircases is attach a configurable "fence" with a gate in it to the walls on either side of the stairs. That way you don't have to attach to the banister at all. I'm sure I haven't explained it well, but you can see what I mean here:

It's a bit pricey, but it is very good quality and looks nice too. We had to use it at the top of our basement stairs because we couldn't find another gate that worked.

I bypassed stairs in one apartment because the rails were narrow and metal.. instead I took a play yard thing we were given and tied it to the rail on the one side and extended across the access to the stairs.. rather than just the stairs themselves.. this also blocked out the entry way which was fine.
