Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello again!

I am now here, asking for book suggestions on raising daughters-from a Catholic perspective.

I see plenty of secular books on the library shelves, though skimming them, they put such a strong emphasis on independence, and drip of negative feminism.

I see Focus on the Family has a book about raising boys-but I haven't seen anything like it for raising girls!

Any suggestions?

As always, thank you!!

ETA: WHOOPS! I MEAN A BOOK FOR *MOMS* RAISING DDS.

Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters by Meg Meeker

She isn't explicitly Catholic, but talks about faith in a chapter explicity and drops hints all through out.

I think I heard that James Dobson is writing one on raising girls right now. I can't remember where I heard that, though...

These are not Catholic, but I've seen them on the bookshelves of home educating Christian families with girls:
Raising Girls
The Wonder of Girls
Mom's Everything Book for Daughters
------I haven't read them, simply seen them.....but it may give you a starting point.

This is written by Steve Wood, a Catholic: The ABCs of Choosing a Good Husband, and although it's not specifically ABOUT the mother-daughter relationship, I think this would be a helpful book for all mothers to use as an aid to that long-term-vision while thinking about how we are raising our girls.

Also, if you have a Christian bookstore in your area.....may be worth a little outing to peruse. They won't be Catholic, but still helpful and worth browsing the selection.

I got both the ABC's of Choosing a Good Husband and the Good Wife one... I'm not sure that they're not more helpful in raising the kids flip flopped.. for instance the Good Wife one would give you ideas of what your daughter should be learning to be a Good Wife.. while the Good Husband book can help with the boys and what they need. And then of course when they get older flip flopping back so that the girls can learn about what to look for in a husband and the boys in a wife.

Bella ~ I found a book for you!!!!!!!

The Wonder of Girls, by Michael Guiran.

Barbara C. mentioned it in another thread, and I got it a couple days ago from the library, and think it is just what you are looking for!!!! I've only skimmed so far, but like what I see. It's not nec. from a Christian-perspective, but he talks about the "political scene" in the beginning. I'm sensing a balance there.   Even if there isn't, there is still lots of practical talk, ideas, suggestions, explanations, etc.   And, like anything, we take what we can use and leave the rest!

I LOVED The Wonder of Girls!! I was actually led to it by this thread. I have pages of notes I made from it. And while there were one or two things that I thought he missed the ball on, overall I think he had a lot of good and important knowledge to impart. He takes a very traditional look at dating, too, similar to courtship.

Adding Mother Daughter Duet to this list. It looks good, and Joann10 just reviewed it!

Joann10 wrote:
"When your daughter was born, you had a thousand hopes and dreams for her....including that one day you'd be best friends." Mother and Daughter Duet

As the mother of five girls, I hope to be able to say someday that they have grown into some of my closest friends, and I am so thankful to God that I can say that my oldest daughter, Becky, and I are the best of friends, and my other girls and I seem to be heading down this same joyous path!!
I have to say, that I learned how to build these relationships with my daughters from my own mother, who is my best friend.
If you are not blessed to have such wonderful relationships, mother and daughter team, Cheri Fuller & Ali Plum have written the book, Mother and Daughter Duet.
The chapters begin with "Letting Go" and continue through various life milestones that we all go through and how to deal with them harmoniously with our daughters, from the time they leave the nest, get married and then become mothers themselves.

The chapters are written from the perspective of both the mother and daughter, which I enjoyed. The book also includes discussion questions which would be helpful in working through our own mother daughter relationships.

If you are looking to improve upon your relationship with your daughter, I do recommend this book.
