Hi, I'm trying to stay away during Lent, but need opinions/experience asap.
Rugby is now being offered as a Spring club sport for High School and Jr High in our area.
It has been around for awhile for men, and we've always enjoyed watching their practices/matches from afar while at Soccer games/tournaments.
Interestingly, oldest ds had been doing some online research re: authentic Catholic Colleges/Universities and had made the observation that most of them offer Rugby. (even Steubenville!,Ave Maria, etc.)
Dh says it is because it is a low-cost sport, which makes sense!
So, my question is: should we let our oldest two do this?
I'm looking in particular with reassurances/warnings as far as injury is concerned- and/or lifelong benefits if any of you have dh's who played/continue to play. (there are men here in their late 40's on teams!!)
This would replace baseball and or track for my sons, but we all think it could possibly be a more practical sport for college and in the long run- as their first love is football, and this is related...????

My now almost 20-yo-son, played club Rugby in high school and loved it! It's much more "regulated" than football and, depending on the coach, can be VERY maturing for the boys. It's a great team sport, so there are no stars ... cooperation gets the match won.
That said, I was asked to play women's rugby in college (Gonzaga in Spokane -- and yes, it's Catholic) BECAUSE I was so mean and tough   !

Thanks Mary. Both of the boys are really excited about it, we'll see, as we are about 2 weeks late.
oldest ds said he had seen posters up at school about it but wasn't sure. (so like oldest ds, it takes him awhile to warm up to an idea!!)He has since figured out who he knows who is playing.
Then they saw the float at the St. Patrick's Day parade and were really interested.
wow. women's rugby. I think I'd like that!! we were looking at the USA rugby website- lots of great info.
now, if only Lacrosse were around here we'd be set!!

Kacky, maybe she'd be like my dd(8) who GIGGLES the entire time she's on the field playing lacrosse.. even in the midst of "fighting" for the ball.
It's the most hilarious thing

Lisa, rugby is very big over here. I have only seen a few games, but I really like it. Unlike football, the game just keeps going as in no clock stoppages except for halftime and timeouts. So a 90-minute games is usually two hours.
The boys do not wear any padding although I have seen some head protection to protect their ears. Especially the boys who play in the scrum. I will say that the boys tend to have some injuries to their legs (mostly cuts and bruises), but not usually a back or neck injury.
Rugby is a physical sport and the game is very intense. And Mary, I cannot imagine you playing rugby because you are mean and tough ...

Lisa,
My husband began playing rugby in college and played through his mid-30s. He loved playing and loves watching. In fact, a few years ago, he flew to Wales for a weekend to watch the World Rugby Cup with some Welch friends he met playing rugby.

the boys are so excited!! two coaches have contacted us and also sent us some very informative articles about kids and rugby- especially noted was how it is the perfect "off season" sport for both soccer and football- perfect!
I'm impressed with the level of courtesy that I see already, both in person and in the articles.
So, dh will take the two oldest to training on Monday night, although ds almost 13 will most likely honor his commitment to baseball for the season as far as games/matches go.
I'll update after that!

Update:
Joe LOVED it!! Dh was able to observe the entire practice and was very impressed as well.
There is an excellent ratio of coaches to boys, and it was nice for joe to see many familiar football and soccer players that he knows from a few schools.
we are looking forward to a big match for the men this Sat. I like the tradition that the home team provides a meal for the away team after the game!
and..best of all, it sounds like this might be a totally free club! Air National Guard is providing the uniforms, and the pitch use is free, etc.

oh, and PS, you have to be 8th grade, and at least 14, so Paul has a year to go before he can do anything but observe!

We've been talking about this around here and the boys would really like to do that (and wrestling, football, baseball ... I guess they like sports) but are too young (imho ) to do any of those super-physical sports. I'm glad to see they have a minimum age!
My boys will just have to be content with going to dh's hs and cheering (or growling ... the new mascot is the Wolves  ) and enjoying being outside.

Mary. I will say wrestling club this winter really helped get the wiggles out of my boys- all 4 of them!! Dominic never competed, but there were plenty of other 6 y/o boys in the club for him to roll around with and learn proper technique, not to mention he slept so well!!!
Football here starts at age 5. I think it is flag ages 5-7 and then tackle when they are age 8 and up. Although it looked fun, we stuck to soccer until Joe was a freshman, and until Paul was a 7th grader, before "letting" them switch over to football.
My boys are very physical, and we firmly believe that sports must be a part of their education!!!

oh yeah ... definitely a God-given thing! My boys couldn't live without contact sports ... even if it's only "wrestling" in the living room!

I really like the way Lacrosse adapts for the younger kids. The amount of contact allowed at high school is a lot different than that allowed at 4th grade.
And we're starting "soft lacrosse" (it's used by PE programs and parks and rec departments) for our younger kids here. There's no contact at all. And the goals are on the end lines so no one is behind them. There are no goalies.. the sticks and balls are "soft".. so there is no need of any of the personal protective gear either.
I love the effect on my kids that sports has.. I don't think it's sports so much as the directed physical activity. Just running around doesn't consistently help the way running (or swimming) for a game or race does.

Joe has his first match? game? this sat. he's a wing, whew! he made it under the 190 lb requirement to be a front runner guy and is a "back" - maybe this will be a bit safer??
afterwards there will be a big dinner- should be fun! too bad dh is of course working and will be out of town...
