My boys are going on two...and while they are nowhere near ready for potty training, I need to get myself "edjumacated" on how this works with little boys...my girls were pretty easy. But they were a)singletons, and b)girls. Sophie took the longest, and seh was done by the time she was 3 1/2 (land sakes, I wish it had been sooner...  ).
Anyway, these are my first boys to train. And I haven't got a clue. And its been almost 2 yrs since I had to train Sophie, and honestly, I don't remember much...only the constant sitting. But boys have "parts" to control, and goodness only knows how *that* works. Do you train them sitting or standing? Sitting first, then standing? AGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DH is of NO help. A)he's gone alot, and B)he doesn't have the slightest clue how to make this happen either--he apparently was one of those dc who potty trained themselves early on (family legend has it that his mom--who had 13 dc by the time she was finished--heard some noise in the bathroom one night, got up to see which of her children it was, took a look, bleary eyed, said "Oh, it's ____." Turned around to go back to bed, and did another 180 and said "It's ____!!!")...
Help!? Please???

:shrug: I'm never sure how I manage the boys.. for one thing they just haven't cared enough until they're older and I in no way want to be the potty cop running around making everyone go potty every X hours. So I want them to want it for themselves. Which means my boys are older.. and generally speaking.. they are most interested in copying daddy and now of course big brother.. so I pass them off that way  but that does mean that they typically learn standing up but when they learn, because they're older it's also a typically short process.

Rachel - I have pottytrained 3 boys each in less than a week (including twins) as soon as they are 2. No stress really at all. I am hoping to do the same with my 19m old - before our new blessing in May. I will come back here - just too busy for a long email right now - activity evening and lots of boys going crazy!
Please remind me if I forget to come back to this - my brain is tired and forgetful!

We are training boy #4 right now. I have always trained them sitting (partly because they don't have full control yet, and I don't want them to accidentally go #2 while standing to go #1!
I've used little potty chairs, or had them sit backwards on the big toilet (like they are straddling a horse, facing the seat lid).
And, uh, I always remind them to "poke it down" - tuck it down into the bowl, KWIM? Sorry if that's TMI!
Two of my boys trained before age 2, one at about 3/3-1/2, and one not until he was 4! Each kid is different.

My boys trained between 26 and 28 months. I taught them initially sitting down, then they graduated to standing when they were older and taller. We had a small potty, but I had them sit on the regular toilet backwards most often.
Like another poster, we trained them to point down, and then graduated to teaching them to aim when they were older and standing.
I've only trained boys (so far) and they were both done in 2-3 weeks. I waited until they showed definite signs (able to pull up and push down their own pants, realizing when they wet, etc.) and then we went straight to thick cloth undies.
My boys did wear pullups at night for a long time after they were completely day trained.
