I know this has been debated a lot. Just trying to figure out what is the best - we have a history of sensitive skin and also food allergies so we avoid nut oils, perfumes etc. Right now I am leaning towards Aveeno baby as possibly the safest. Maybe with coconut oil and olive oil too. Things I have ruled out

Burts Bees - smells too strong
California baby - don't like price or smell. have not seen great results.
Aubrey organics - do not like smell - plus has gse which some babies cannot take
Poofy - uses nut oils
All J&J, Huggies and other regular baby products

I don't know what stores you have in the area, but at Whole Foods you can return a product if you don't like it. I had to do that with some products that burned my dh's skin.

At least then, after you make your best decision before you try it, you won't be out any $$$ if it doesn't work for you.

Just a thought...

I don't have a real suggestion for you....just some info.

Aveeno, which has worked like a charm on my dry skin guy, is made by J&J. I had been avoiding J&J b/c of their links to PP and was so disappointed to find our "cure" was made by them. I didn't know if that was why you were avoiding J&J.

I thought you had this one figured out, Marilyn?!

I had the best luck this past winter with plain ole' Lanolin! I found the greatest way to apply it. It's kind of sticky and hard to rub on soft, smudgy, pudgy baby skin. I was leaving the tube sitting on top of my diaper wipes container (which I fill with warm water for dipping my wipe washcloths in) and then my wipes container cracked and I bought a new one. I bought a Munchkin wipes warmer at Target. What's great about this warmer is that it has 2 openings - one to drop in a package of wipes and one to lift out the individual wipes. Since I use my wipes warmer for holding a small tub of warm water, I open the large opening every time, leaving a perfect little warm place with a convenient lid up top for holding a small tube of lanolin and keeping it nice and soft and warm for applying. Does this make any sense at all?

Anyway, that was a long winded way of saying - I really prefer a warm tube of lanolin! Both my girls have small spots of eczema and I like the lanolin for offering relief and helping to clear it up.

You know Jen - I don't think I have anything in life figured out!!
I like the idea of Lanolin - just worried about reactions. Maybe I should just get a little tube to try. What brand do you use?

I would so like to get some sweet smelling massage oil - I love those sleepy massaged sweet smelling newborns!!

lotions? don't use any - stick with olive oil or baby oil

soap/shampoo? I'd go with Aveeno and I'd only use it when neccessary. (as in they are truely dirty and a play session in the tub just isn't going to cut the grime ) most are bathed too often. I know that sounds impossible to do with kids, but it's true and even with good products it can really aggrivate their skin/scalp.

We avoid any scented products. What has worked lately for us for bath use is Aquaphor Baby Gentle Wash. I still use it for my older son.

Cetaphil is still one of my favorites, but I know some people need to avoid the almonds.

I remember long ago having to use glycerin soap (Neutrogena bars) and Alpha Keri oil for my eczema. Lots more choices now.

If you could make your own I think that would be the best. Simple ingredients. Coconut oil or olive oil are good ones. Just massage it in. You don't need alot.
I started making my own baby stuff for my little guys. Simple is always better when it comes to babies sensitive skin. I like the herbs lavender and calendula. I infuse my oils with them. They have healing qualities and leave a very light pleasant scent.
For washing purposes I've always just used handmade unscented goat milk soap. Gentle and if I need to wash their hair I use that too.

Trish - how do you infuse herbs into oil?

Also - do you sell the unscented goat milk soap - would you tell me what the ingredients are? I checked the ingredients of some goat milk soaps at Wholefoods and they had a lot of yukkies as well as fragrance.

Thanks!

To infuse oils: I take about 1 handful of herbs per cup of oil (really scientific I know    ), grind them, put them in a pyrex measuring cup with the oils and put that in close to boiling water in a pot. Kind of like double boiling. I infuse them like this for about 2 hours checking the water level adding more if necessary. When it's done you can strain it using a unbleached coffee filter or flannel. You can't use cheese cloth because the herbs are so small it can go through and that wouldn't feel very nice on baby's skin. I make very small batches so that's how I do it. Some use a crock pot to infuse. I'm pretty sure Elizabeth has done it that way. I'm horrible for writing out instructions. I hope you can understand it.

I do make and sell unscented goat milk soap. I use olive oil, goat milk, coconut oil, palm oil, sodium hydroxide (lye), cocoa butter, and shea butter. There is no lye left in the soap after it's saponified. Just gentle and creamy lathering soap. I do what is called super fatting. I add less lye than what is necessary to saponify so there's extra oils in the final bar. (On a side note you can't make soap without the lye).   Some people label it as Saponified oils of ....... In Canada I have to label all my ingredients in INCI (international nomenclature of cosmetic ingredients) so if you look at the website and read the ingredients they may look like a bunch of chemicals.

Thanks Trish. It is the shea butter I am a little worried about - my dd is allergic to it (but she is also latex and nut allergic) - what are your views on shea butter?

Definitely stay away from the shea butter if she's allergic to it. I was going to mention that if you have a latex allergy to stay away from it.
It's too bad though because it is such a wonderful butter. Especially the unrefined type. I use it straight on my little guys dry skin and it is wonderful. I use it in alot of stuff that I make because I love it. I love rubbing it into my hands. Its fast absorbing and non greasy. Keeps them from cracking in winter.

But... extra virgin coconut oil, the one that smells like coconuts, is great too. In looking for a soap just check out the ingredients. In my opinion for what it's worth a good soap should have olive oil in it. Nearer the top of the ingredients list. I like goat milk soap because it has such a creamy lather with out drying out the skin. If you need unscented be on the look out for the words fragrance, parfum, or essential oil. There should be a soapmaker or a store around you who would make such a soap.

I didn't use soap on my baby until fairly recently. We use olive oil or coconut oil a lot - it's all I use for our faces, that plus plain warm water. For my children I use Weleda calendula products - it's a nice fragrance of the calendula - pricey but lasts and is pure enough to eat.

I should probably check the packaging just in case there's a hidden paraben in it, but I have finally found something I love...Burt's Bees. My littles have terribly dry skin and this seems to keep them from feeling and looking like crocodiles in the winter, and it smells better than Aubrey Organics (I love how well their baby lotion works but my entire family cannot stand the smell ). A bonus is I can get it at Target, since Whole Foods is a tremendously long way for me to drive for a bottle or two of baby soap.

I know it sounds funny but I have to say it again - Burts Bees makes my kids break out in hives!    I'm serious though.

I made a concoction of coconut oil and olive oil recently that I have been using on our eczema here. It seems to be doing okay.

Trish, you said the kind that smells like coconuts...I don't smell that in mine. It's the soapmaking kind, that melts at 75 degrees. Do I have the right kind?

Lisbet... that's refined coconut oil and it'll work too. The unrefined stuff smells so much nicer and it does smell like coconuts. It's called virgin or extra virgin coconut oil.

I love, love, love Shaklee's baby shampoo and they just took parabens out of their entire product line. I would check it out online though just to be sure there are no other allergens in it that might irritate your baby.
