Probably pathetic to admit, but I have never seen anyone use cloth diapers.
Is there a tutorial somewhere to instruct the ignorant?

Green Mountain Diapers has lots of pictures to walk you through it and tons of good advice!
The pocket diapers and all-in-ones (AIO) are pretty self-explanatory, at least as far as the diapering goes. The laundering gets a little complicated.

Tracey - what exactly would be helpful to see? The actual changing of a diaper - the storing - the washing? Let me know and I could possibly do a tute. I have a newborn and a young todder in diapers right now, and I use a variety of diapers - pins and pull ons, snap and velcro wraps with fitted diapers or prefolds, woolie soakers, and some pocket diapers too.

Thanks for the offer. Anything would be helpful! I have done a lot of research and I think I understand most of the lingo and the different options available. But then you mentioned woolie soakers and I have no idea what those are!
Do you use disposable wipes or cotton reusable ones? I like the idea of reusable a lot.
I am especially confused about the washing of messy diapers. It sounded like people simply put the dirty diapers in the dry pail- but what about the messy poopy diapers (non-solids)? I imagine you have to rinse them, right? Then where do you put them until washing?
Oh, and what do you do when you are out? I am so used to simply throwing the dirty diaper away. What do you bring to pack the dirty diapers in? Or do you use disposable if you are at, say, a museum for the day?
And the use of prefolds versus inserts. And does doubling for night simply mean using more than one prefold?
This will be for my newborn due September 1st (and my first diaper changing of any sort in 7 years!)
I am really enjoying all of this research (once I got over the initial shock of so many choices).

Can I just tack on that I'm due in May and researching the same things. It sounds like Tracey is a few steps ahead of me in even understanding what's available out there. It's all so overwhelming. Any help is appreciated!

Congratulations! It is a bit overwhelming learning about cloth diapers, isn't it? But I am really excited to give it a try!
Oh, and I guess I changed diapers more recently than 7 years- I forgot they were IN diapers for a few years! I like to blame these things on pregnancy brain!

I can answer some of your washing questions from my experience (which is not nearly as much as Lisbets!).
I use prefolds and Thirstie's covers. I'd love to go wool, but flat out can't afford them.
Anyway, I don't put a full dirty diaper in the pail except when they are newborns and nursing. Once solids are in the picture, I just rinse them out quickly in the toilet. This cracks me up because I used to be so sensitive about gross stuff like that. Good hand washing is essential obviously!  Then I just toss them in the pail (I use a dry pail). It doesn't really matter to me that they are wet since my pail is lined with a PUL bag. I use these. I just stick it in a 13 gallon trash can with a lid. (Also, I have 2 of these so that while one is washing with the diapers, I can immediately stick in another one.)
As far as going out, I used to just bring along some extra plastic grocery bags to put them in and then toss them into the diaper pail when I got home. I have since purchased a dry bag for when we are out (I have one of these and love it).
With an infant, I would just double the prefolds at night. So yes, I would use two prefolds and use a snappi to attach them and cover it with the cover. I thought it looked uncomfortable, but it didn't seem to bother baby! The other great thing was that with my first two who were in disposables they would have middle of the night explosive diapers that would create a huge mess. The Thirsties PUL covers contain everything so that all the clothes and sheets didn't get gross!

I agree with everything Lisbet and Anniemm have said. The lingo is hard at first but you will figure it out in no time.
I use mostly prefolds and pul covers. I would love to get more into wool but it is pricey and I just cannot afford it.
I also do have fitteds and a few pockets and AIO's. My faves are the prefold hands down. I love to pin too, I like the snappi but not as much as the pins.

Speaking of folding, looking at 2D pics sometimes still had me confused so I'd try them out on a large stuffed animal while I was still pregnant. (This worked well w/ learning how to use my Moby also!)
