Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

So we went to the hospital yesterday afternoon...
my little daughter spilled hot water on her chest while we were making hot cocoa and was burned. I thought I was being over protective so I took her to the local hospital. On the way out the door I grabbed some picture books and a few snacks. We ended up being transported by ambulance to a childrens hopital burn unit and stayed the night and all day! She is fine now and will be fine. 2nd degree burn that will heal very quickly and she is not in pain at the moment...We are tired, but OK...

but I was totally unprepared to leave the house for an overnight and I started thinking...you never know when you will be in a situation like this and should always be ready.

So besides always having snacks and water in the car, I started making a list in my mind as I was up last night in the childrens hospital ER ( a very terrible place to be at night, let me tell you...) of what I should always have in my purse because YOU NEVER KNOW....

contact solution and glasses
a book for me ( I had kid books, but nothing for me)
a rosary and Magnificat
emergency phone numbers....there are a bunch of numbers I need to program in my cell....neighbors, etc...
cell phone charger
gum
CASH (I was so lucky because I often have non and just happened to have some and I needed it for vending machines, etc...)

What else?

Do you have a well stocked purse or an emergency bag?

Also, it was such a blessing that my house just happened to be in PERFECT ORDER and clean yesterday (RARE...) but I was not embarresed to call neighbors and ask them to enter and do stuff. A little reminder to me of why we should always keep the home under control because you never know when someone else will need to step in and help you out...

I guess another reason to always get dressed and do your hair every day too! I was dressed nicely and comfortably, but my hair was not done...no biggie....but YOU JUST NEVER KNOW when you have to leave your safe home and can not get to comfortable if you know what I mean.

I don't have an emergency bag, but I do have an evacuation box (all that old NEO training from 20+ years ago on an overseas military base dies hard, dontcha know!). It has everything from marriage license to shot cards, plus all the insurance documents, etc.

I'm glad everything turned out okay. Hospital time is very scary.

I'm so glad your little one is okay! My little sister pulled a cup of tea onto her chest years ago, and my mom was running to the car with her when the next door neighbor, a nurse, saw them. She grabbed my mom and took her to their house where she put some cream called Silvadene (which she had a doctor's sample of) on my sister's burn--and luckily, the fact that she did that so quickly kept the burn from being a bad injury!

I like your "emergency purse" idea. It's a good reminder to have cash on hand, especially; seems like I forget that a lot. Here are some things I do carry:

spare contact lenses (I use daily disposables)
antibacterial wipes
purse-pack of garbage bags (the small ones)
rosary
Pieta prayer book
cough drops
aspirin/tylenol
small first-aid kit (bandaids, antiseptic cream, gauze)
pen and paper
brush, lip gloss, powder compact, purse-size hairspray
compass (on my keychain)

I can see that I'm missing some things! I used to carry a small flashlight, but the kids must have borrowed it. And I wouldn't have a book to read unless I grabbed one. I should probably get a sewing kit, too; we had to borrow a safety pin at church once when my daughter's skirt lost part of its hem (I think she snagged it on the pew). So, not totally prepared yet, but thanks for starting this thread!! I'm going to think about what else I need...

I'm glad your daughter is going to be okay!

I always keep $20 cash in the car -- usually in $5's. It's a habit I got into during college and it's saved me a few times!

I always carry bandaids in my purse. The dc forever seem to need them when out.
