My little guy, #8, will turn one six days before Christmas. Of course, he doesn't "need" anything, but the kids would be very disappointed if he doesn't get a couple of things for his birthday and then for Christmas.
So, what is your absolute favorite toy for that age?

the little soft dollies (maybe 5 inches tall) I made my 1 yr old last year were used quite a bit.. being soft they were my toy of choice for toy to take to Mass during that difficult time after about 9 months until 18 mo or so.
the wooden teething toy that had parts that move.. elastic so it could bend and such.. that was nice especially for in the car. My sister made a little bear that was just the right size for cuddling for such a small child.
oh and something I'm getting this year but would have been good last year too - an "Oball" it's about a 6 inch diameter ball but it's a flexible plastic (you know those shoes that are "jellies".. very like that) and it's open with lots of O's so that it's very easy to grasp.. it collapses and can be rolled or thrown or even sort of bounced.. but it's very light weight.

I was going to say some sort of soft graspable (is that a word?? ) ball. I like the sound of that Oball.

Here's a thread with a similar question:
Baby Boy Toys
My ds just turned one and his favorites are any kind of ball, a big magnadoodle (although I don't know if those are technically considered safe for his age), the Discovery Toys stacking cups, and a big scooter/cart ride on toy. Yes, my living room looks like Toys R Us right now.

Our traditional first birthday gift is Mylar balloons. We never have regular balloons because of the choking hazard so the kids think this is awesome fun for the week that they last. Very festive.

We have an Oball that Joseph loves now. All the kids like it. The Discovery toy vanilla smelling ball with bumps is nice too.
We like those touch and feel books at that age.

Molly so funny you ask for that DT consultant too. They totally have all of my favorite 1yold toys. The tangiball is what Rachel described. I love love the Hide Inside. It's fabric and colorful and you can take just one little piece of it with you if you needed (mine always become attached to the crinkly bumpy moon piece).

I was looking at the Discovery Toys website and reminiscing. They have brought back so many toys that my oldest two had as babies. I love the Tangiball, too. We had one for years and it disappeared. I gave the Hide Inside to my 15 yr old niece on her first birthday!
Bridget, thanks for the Mylar idea. I hadn't considered that. Charlie works at a party store. He could stock us up on balloons for the month of December! (since we have 4 birthdays that month!)
