I've been cutting my son's hair since he was born (he's almost four now) and for the last several months each haircut has been more traumatic. I've been going as long as possible between cuts and by tonight his hair was practically in his eyes. I set him up for a haircut after dinner and he freaked out so much that he threw up. He tends to throw up when he gets really upset so that wasn't totally out-of-the ordinary for him but I NEVER want to go through this with him again. He just seemed so traumatized.
How do you handle haircuts for your little boys?

My kids have lots of hair - so around 18 months I started taking them to a barber. Before that, I did it myself. My oldest has always loved it, my middle boy had to sit in his father's lap the first few times.
Plus, I just like the look of a professionally done haircut. My boys get fairly short cuts (but not buzzed) and I just couldn't do it myself.
There's an ice cream shop in the same plaza, so we usually stop for a cone after the haircut. Makes it more of a special outing.

are you using scissors or clippers? sometimes as they learn about dangers they can decide something is dangerous that they were oblivious to when younger.. and yet they're not old enough to see that it's ok..
We do buzz cuts (and when old enough I'll do a flat top or they can go with daddy to get one) so I use clippers almost exclusively.. and what I've done is shown them on my hand and then on their hand that they'e safe from the clippers. And that seems to help tremendously.. the worst thing here is the squirmies from all that itchy hair.. even a good cover doesn't help too much.. so I work fast and tell them I'm working fast.. and have a bath ready for them to hop into to get the loose hair off.

We use clippers, too. Honestly, my son, 2 1/2 years old, is now OK with the noise of it. He used to squirm, so Dad would hold him on his lap while getting the haircut. Now my son only squirms when I buzz close to his ears. The other "trick" is a good video playing so as to keep him looking ahead so I can give a good cut 
At our house, I cut all 3 "boys" (2 ds, and 1 dh) on "haircut day." The boys pick the video and then take turns on the haircut chair. It's a boy thing and we try to make it somewhat fun

Sorry, I can't help but chuckle a bit -- my now-12-yo went through this horrible stage at age 2-3. What worked for us was gum and videos. And REALLY MINIMAL haircutting, i.e., only the part that would really bother him (hair in the eyes, etc.) I don't really remember now how he outgrew it -- maybe watching Dad having his hair cut (by me too). We also let him go without haircuts for as long as could be tolerated.

We just did scissors until the fear of the noise subsided. Of course, it didn't help that I cut his ear  - my eye-hand is terrible, so the job went to big sis who is totally good with this kind of thing. When I cut it, since I was using scissors, sometimes I did it while he was playing in the bath - but then he got scared of the clippings floating in the water . The hair cut of a somewhat squirmy boy does not look the epitomy of perfection and we accepted some rather bad looking cuts (he didn't care and it wasn't worth making him sit still any longer).

I use scissors. I think clippers would be totally out of the question for my ds--he is so noise-sensitive. Maybe next time I'll do dh's hair first and then have him hold ds. I wonder if I should wet his hair, too. I find that fine, young hair is easier to cut dry but I'm sure that really ups the itch factor. My poor little boy has the dopiest looking hair right now because I didn't really finish his cut last night . . .

My son is 3 and I use clippers - but he only sometimes sits still even with a video and M&M's. He really can't stand the hair itching him, especially on his face. So he has started wearing a visor while I am cutting the front of his hair and parts of the sides, and then we remove it so I can cut the rest. This keeps hair from falling onto his face. The visor is a cheap foam one that he got at a birthday party. You can buy them at arts & crafts stores along with decorating supplies: Here
I just vacuum it off when we're done.

We put the lollipop in the 2yo's mouth before we start, and he just gets a buzz, not a style, to keep it quick. Also, each of the kids got to choose their own after haircut candy (Halloween sized piece) which sits in the cupboard only for that purpose. The girls are each "tied" to a specific brother, so they get their own piece when the boy gets the cut. They usually help with getting supplies and sweeping etc.
This is not the gentlest approach, but our boys who fight haircuts usually get a talk about obedience.

I used to put my now 13yo in the kitchen sink... well sitting on the side with his feet in the sink then give him a sucker or a freezy pop and cut fast  I'd wet his hair a little too.
EVERYTHING, including the sticky treat was covered in hair but the cut was done and he thought he'd gotten a huge treat. Since suckers weren't everyday fare we'd rinse it as best we could and he'd eat it anyway  Gross! But at least his hair was cut.

What type of clippers do you ladies have?
I bought some at Target for about $20 and for some reason my dh says that it pulls his hair rather than cutting it. I am wondering if I am doing something wrong or if I just need to get better quality clippers?
