My little guy is walking - and I need to get him a pair of shoes - our budget is so tight and I am wondering if there is an alternative to Stride Rite for a first pair of shoes. I am hoping not to have to spend $40 on a pair of shoes for a baby.(no older brother shoes to pass down - my last little guy got all the hand me downs) He uses the Target look alike Robies/weeboks for walking around the house - but I need something for outdoors. Please share any ideas.

I don't know if they have them in boy shoes but last year I got my little one a lovely pair of shoes from target.. the sole has "rubber" in sections on the bottom so they were very soft and flexible vs shoes with a solid bottom. The ones I got were cute little brown and pink mary janes which is why I'm not sure if they have boy shoes like that

Thank you Jodie - I got the cutest pair of boy shoes in Target - soft and pliable for first walkers - and much better for my budget

Marilyn--What are the soles of the shoes like? Are they softer than some of the little shoes you can find at places like Target and Wal-Mart? I'm asking because my Kolbe has only ever worn Robeez or the Target version and he hates regular shoes. After a half hour or so, he just sits crying and tugging at them to get them off. He's outgrowing the Robeez he has now, and I wanted to just buy regular shoes for the fall, but I think I'm going to have to look for something to transition him.

I can't find them online, but I bought a pair of shoes from Wal-mart that we both love. They are two-tone brown suede on top, and come up over the ankle. There is one velcro fastner that holds the shoe closed. On the bottom is a pliable, textured rubber sole. My son is able to walk in them easily. I was pleasently surprised when I realized that the shoe didn't fall apart after he wore them outside-- they have held up very well. I think they were about $15, and seem worth the price.

We never bought any shoes from Stride Rite or anywhere like that. It is important that the shoes are flexible and fit properly - we simply asked our pediatrician what was best for developing feet and he told us barefeet  but did tell us what to look for in shoes, so I'm sure your ped could tell you medically what is essential. I suspect in your area, protection from the cold would be an issue. Since we live in a mild climate, our children actually didn't wear shoes until they were walking really, really well. We had to transition by buying those socks with non slip soles to get them used to something on their feet. By the time we were doing this, they were pretty active and had been walking for quite some time. I don't think you have to waste money on fancy shoes.

Colleen - I got a brown version of these shoes
The soles are comparable to stride rite - in fact I find them more flexible and soft. My little guy cried yesterday with them on - but has been wearing them today with no problem. They are obviously harder and more sturdy than the Robeez - but we need them for being outside. I like them better than Stride Rite - and not just price wise either The only thing was I took ages trying to find the right size - something that is easy at Stride Rite as they help find the right size

Since I have bad feet, I guess I'm a stickler for getting the feet measured and getting shoes when they start walking. I do the Stride Rite thing, and have a shoe shop that I love the owner and the customer service. The baby doesn't wear shoes until he starts walking, and since he was a December baby I admit I only bought one pair of Robeez and he's been barefoot since he outgrew them. I love bare baby feet!

I'm going to have to buy shoes for the boys soon...ugh. Mostly cause it is beginning to get cooler, and they will need something (that reminds me, they need socks, too).
They aren't walking--they cruise fine--but I'll need to get something before the winter shoes are all out and the spring shoes not in yet, iykwim.

Soft stars are pricey but they have winter soled version- the original owner created the pattern for robbez before starting his own company.
I would send you our but baby # 3 is wearing them.
I fully plan on handing them onto # 4 next year
My dc each have a pair of mocs and after walking they get outdoor soles then in summer a pair of tevas- a pair of boots for the rain and that's all we wear.
They wear like iron so the priceyness pays off eventually :)
Both our local monetssori and waldorf schools encourage these for all ages.
If you call them they will custom make exactly what you want -I had a different type of fastener put on the ones we wanted and they didnt charge me at all.
Plus the new owners are two very nice moms -One is Catholic :)

Maggie--The Soft Stars look perfect. Thank you so much for the info. I think I'm going to get him a pair of those. I think he needs a 7 but I'm going to measure his foot to be sure. If you happen to run across any in that size or any size up, I would love it if you would pm me.
