I wrote a post on my blog about the why of homeschooling for us - the why being that we are creating memories for our children, memories for them to store away, to form their childhood and their adulthood.
So, I was curious - what have you done this week to create positive memories for your kids?
I know I will never know what my kids will take away and store after an experience but today we decided to play. Had a fun French class at a friend's house and then lingered for morning tea and lots of outside play. Met a family friend, a priest, and went to the movies together and to lunch.
A different sort of school day but a school day nonetheless -an unschooling day of hopefully positive memories.
So, any memory creating in your home this week that you'd care to share?

what a good idea...
Sometimes I think that just sitting and reading books aloud is quite the "memory maker"
Just yesterday I was reading to my ds7 and I made a point to share with him how I was enjoying the silly facial expressions that the illustrator used on the animals. ds7 and I proceeded to laugh and giggle our way through the whole story and to make silly faces ourselves. I'd like to think he will remember a few moments like those someday! I sure hope so.

This is a good "check-up" question, Leonie, thanks for posting it.
This morning when I got home from Mass I invited my five yr. old dd to help me make some homemade granola. She loves the granola and she loves helping out when I cook so we had lots of fun and hopefully made a nice memory for her!

Yesterday was a memorable day altogether. A wonderful read-aloud, a long walk in the woods, a hearty simple meal--nothing special, but it just had the feel of a day worth remembering. The kind of day that when you think back on it makes you sigh and think *those were the good days* and you wish every day could be just as sweet.

Oh, lovely days - and lovely memories everyone.
You know, Theresa, sometimes simple is more - we can create mini memories, 10 minutes here or there, with food ( like Chris) or books (like Judy) or a joke or a discussion.
Last night we watched Battlestar Galactica after Mass and talked about love and responsibility - who knew that TV time together could be memories and learning? Well, we unschoolers know that!

Sounds like fun! Today I saw Mamma Mia with two other homeschooling mothers and I've been singing Abba songs all day - to my kids' enjoyment.

Blueberry picking...Then making yummy blueberry muffins.
Answered lots of questions about blueberries to the little ones. It gave us inspiration for a new unit on blueberries. And...inspiration for writing songs about blueberries.
We are going to go blueberry picking again. How could we blow through 10 pounds of blueberries in ONE day???
:)

I was recently talking to the dd of a friend of mine. This girl is 15 years old. She was telling me about their family camping trip. Since gas prices are high and they were pulling a trailer, whenever they were going down a steep hill her dad would take his foot off the gas and see how far they got on momentum. For fun, my friend (this girl's mom) stuck her arms out the window and started rowing. This sounds like such a simple little thing but this girl was describing it to me with such joy. She said she would never forget it. I told my friend what her dd told me and my friend got tears in her eyes. I guess we need to remember to lighten up with our kids sometimes. They remember the small, light hearted things that we do...probably more than the trip to Disney, the extravagant Christmas or whatever we are planning that stresses us adults out!

I asked my kids what they remember from the past week or so:
10yo - helping 3yo at gymnastics and how cute she was
8yo - nothing. But this is the same child that will look like she's having a blast somewhere, and you ask her if she enjoyed herself, and she'll say "No" and recount every tiny thing that went wrong
5yo - putting on goggles and making funny faces
3yo - her gymnastics class and how she "fell on her ____"
OK, not exactly the things I expected! They are outside right now setting up a "free tomatoes" table (the 8yo is reading a book )and seem to be enjoying themselves. Hopefully this will be a good memory (other than the few minutes where I had to corral a screaming 3yo who wouldn't stop touching all the tomatoes, making them fall onto the pavement )

I don't think we've been doing this at all. At least, not lately. I know that all my "free" thoughts have gone into paperwork for situation we are in - reading correspondence, typing replies, researching options, etc.
This is NOT the memory I want my kids to have.
Thanks for the reminder.

oh man..... wish I lived next door to you! I love garden-fresh tomatoes! Had them growing up, but alas I did not receive my mother's green thumb.

Oh, Amy, what a nice idea - to ask the kids right now about their memories.
Paula, you've been through a lot - I often need a reminder, too, to do something small for memories and connections...
Tomorrow, for the Queenship of Our Lady, we are making a very simple Crown Cake. Anotyher little liturgical memory, I hope.

Kinda related to this, but I think it's nice to tell people what memories YOU have of them. My aunt was recently in town and told me that my cousin still talks about how I would proof and edit her papers when she was in junior high/high school when I lived in the area while going to college.
Last summer, another cousin told me how much it meant to her when I would have her spend the night and she was able to spend time away from her 4 siblings.
At his wedding, another cousin mentioned how he had me to thank for learning how to be a good date (we spent a good amount of time together when he was a pre-teen)
All these memories were more than 15 yrs old and at the moment - I never considered what an impact I was having. But, when I heard about it, I definitely felt good about being a positive memory in their lives.

"So, I was curious - what have you done this week to create positive memories for your kids? "
This week I took all my kids and four neighborhood kids and we took a hike down to one of the local cemeteries. We looked at the tombstones especially of one of the more famous occupants (Dr. Bob the founder of AA is buried there!)
Then we all hiked home and on the way I treated everyone to a cheesburger and drink from McDonald's!
I don't know if they'll remember, but it was memorable for me!!
