Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. I just recently switched to cloth for my youngest (17 months)and am having a good experience with pocket diapers. I am due in October, and am wondering if pocket diapers will work well for a newborn, or if it is better to go with a fitted and a cover. I would like to start buying diapers now so it isn't so much of a $$ shock trying to buy them all at once.

Also- does meconium (sp?) wash out of cloth diapers, or is it better to use disposables until it has all passed?

We used disposables until all the meconium was gone.

That is what I suspected, but I thought it was worth asking.

We had these soft disposable inserts for our cloth diapers that we used until the meconium was done.

I have no idea of the name (it was like 6 years ago)....

While I've never used pockets for a newborn (the expense for something that will be worn for such a very short time seems steep to me, kwim?) I always use cloth from the begining, even with the meconium. I have some prefolds and kissaluv fitteds that have caught their share of meconium with minimal staining.

We use cloth from the beginning. We don't have any meconium stains, but perhaps my babies have both passed all their meconium in the hospital? Seems weird that I can't remember that

Usually it's recommended to use sposies the first couple of poos, or disposable liners. Mec can get nasty!

I find pockets and fitteds, etc to be too bulky on newborns, but I'm a huge fan of prefolds, anyway!    I've only ever used prefolds and a simple cover (pro-raps are my favorite) and this baby, and they've worked just fine (I do cheat and do disposables at night, though).

Thanks for all the replies!

So, will a pre-fold with a cover really hold in explosive newborn poos? Is it worth it to buy Kissaluvs size 0, or can an 8-9lb newborn fit into the size 1?

With our first we used prefolds exclusively and we only had a handful of times (if that) when her clothes got dirty from a poo. It may have never happened now that I think of it. From what I have heard, cloth contains the poo better than sposies actually. I can't speak from experience because we have always used cloth.

Maria, I only have kissaluvs b/c I found a bunch second hand for cheap - they do not contain the poops as well those first couple of weeks, they tend to be a touch bulky and gap a bit. Prefolds and a cover such a Prowrap do an awesome job of containing poops, and they are inexpensive since they will only fit for a short time. Newborn diapers will last forever really, and you should be able to use them on many more children.

This is so awesome to know. I will definately just go with prefolds and covers then! I went with the pockets for my 17mo so that my dh and mil would be able to use them. But with the new baby I will be around all the time to change him or her, so it isn't a big deal.

So do you just lay the prefold into the wrap, or is it better to pin or Snappi it?

I love that I will be able to use these over and over with future children. My dh is currently having a hard time with the up front expense, but I think in time he will appreciate the savings.

I've been using Chinese pre-fold part-time with my newborn. We had one or two wet leaks, but that was during Mommy's nap time so I was late on changing her. I've had poo leak onto the cover on the inside, but I've never had it leak out...and this one likes to save up the majority and have about four or five big ones in the day. (My first liked to do a little at a time all day.)

I recently posted on my blog with the amount of money I expect to save by using cloth part time if you want to look over it.

Oh, and I just fold the diaper into the liner. I use whisper wraps with velcro, no pins or anything.

If you decide to use prefolds, you may want to use them with a Snappi. It definitely holds in bf poop!

Little hijack here, but what diaper cover do you all recommend? I have a few Whisper Wraps (Bummis), but they soak through so quickly. Let's just say that I am not a "change 'em every hour" type of mom!

Thanks!

The snappis are so cheap, I will make sure to have 1 or 2 on hand so I can try it out both ways.

I am wondering about covers, too. I will probably try some Prowraps and some Bummis SWW for the new baby. I have 1 Bummis Snap Wrap that I have used successfully overnight with a Cricket's Hemp Fitted Diaper, and I have never had it leak. I usually use a Fuzzi Bunz with 2 inserts overnight, though because I like that the fleece inner keeps her skin dry.

I have 15 year old Prowraps that I used on 5 newborn bottoms. Cheap, easy to clean, indestructable. The newer ones are trimmer, but the older ones still function.

During the mec stage, I use fabric scraps to line the dipes.

We used Chinese prefolds and Bummi's with a Snappi during the day, and a prefold inside a Fuzzi Bunz at night. I just loved those diapers! Oh the sweet diaper-butt!

OKay, you all are making me get back to using my cloth diapers now that things are settling down some here. Where's a cheap source for the Snappis? I'd love to try them. ANyone have any to sell?
