Catchy subject line, huh? 
I need toddler hair help. My beautiful two year old has suddenly refused to keep her hair put up. She even rips out the rubber-band hair pretty that is supposed to inflict enough pain when pulled that she will leave it in!
So, she looks like Cousin It, with hair straight down her face past her mouth. I hate messing with bangs so I always grow the girls hair out from the start. Usually by this age it is long enough to manage and they are agreeable to something to hold it back. Not this one...
Any tried and true hair thingies that are toddler-proof?

(seriously, I could never find anything so we always cut bangs, and let them grow it out when they are more agreeable)

But they can only get away with being Cousin It for a small period of time in their life!! I'm one of those people who finds that look very endearing in a toddler girl. It's kind of like metamorphosis... and then they're a beautiful butterfly.

I just took Maria in to get a little bob haircut. her hair looks so thick and cute and feminine now! she will not keep clips or bands or anything in her hair for more than 5 min, and well, it took just the first hot low '80's day of baseball games to realize that I couldn't stand to look at sweaty, stringy hair all summer.
I am a bangs kind of gal, but I have seen this bob look with no bangs, too...
and, I could part it on the side and put in a big bow if only she'd let me- it definately is still clippable...
one thing that is making me feel not so guilty about her having shorter hair is that I had read that in smaller kids, it does not take much to cause a headache. I know from myself, no matter how "soft" or loose the headband, headbands always give me headaches. So I've thought that perhaps her taking her hair elastic out is because it is just painful??

She's only got boys. Clearly, she's not thinking about what that hair looks like after one of said toddler's frequent feeding sessions  . No advice, Molly, but TONS of empathy.

You're so right. I'm like a grandmother in that sense -- I just get to look at my sister's girls -- love the hair all over the place and send them home... never to brush out a snarl or hear the tears from brushing out a snarl.

When we can keep them from cutting it themselves we do end up doing bangs at that age and then growing them out when they're agreeable.. it really doesn't take long since the pull everything out stage seems to not last too long.
I have one not yet to that stage.. cute wispy baby hair but nothing in her face yet
Then 2 of the others with bangs and one growing out bangs for the second time.. she had bangs for the pull everything out reason.. and then we grew them out.. and then she insisted she wanted bangs again.. so we did that for a while and now she wants them grown out again.. they're just long enough now to sorta stay to the side without assistance.

I was going to suggest a haircut...even a cute bob cut.
Unless you really don't want your dd with short hair.
My girls all have long hair but we do shorter do-s in the summertime.
I'm waiting until after the dance recital next month.
Speaking of which...Garrett and I found lots of "human hair" (as Garrett solemnly proclaimed it while sifting some in the palm of his hand) on my kitchen floor and in back of Daddy's recliner.
When I discovered Annie...sure enough, she had cut her bangs with her brand-new "ladybug" scissors so she'd "be like Chelsea". 
This happened a couple week's ago so now both girls are having to grow out their bangs in time for recital.
I don't know what to tell you, Molly, but here's a HIGH-5.

I keep mine (well, the dds--not ME! LOL) in a short bob with bangs from the time they are old enough for a haircut (usually about 10-11 mos) until they are old enough to care for it mostly on their own (oldest dd reached that point last summer).
I just remember the struggles my mom had with three dds with long hair...no thanks. The hair, the earrings all wait til they are old enough to take care of most of this themselves...
But that's just ur family...

Yep, I'd go for bangs if she really won't keep hair things in. That face is much too adorable to hide under all that hair!

My 3rd dd wasn't having anything to do with clips, etc. so I got her hair cut in a pixie cut. She looked so cute. She has a perky look to her anyway and is the tiniest of the girls....and was super tiny back then. Eventually we grew it out and she has the longest hair in the family now!

Ah, yes, the sweet, sweet sounds of a little girl screaming at the top of her lungs when she sees you get the hairbrush out . . .
And I second the duct tape option
seriously, um, hmm, can you get the hair back up at the top of her head, where its really hard for her to pull out? My vote is for bangs, but one look at my little girl pushing the hair out of her eyes is proof that those don't always work . . . !

See, that is my problem with bangs. I won't keep up with them and she will end up with hair in her eyes, just not as much.
I was really hoping there was that "magic" clip or head-band that she wouldn't mess with. At this point, I just keep a pocketful of pony-tail holders and keep putting it back up.
Just another phase of parenting...

My 4yo dd has a friend named Mary who has a VERY short haircut. Now when my dd is getting a trim, or if her hair is unruly and I say something like "You need your haircut shorter if you can't keep it out of your eyes!" She gets a worried look and says "You're not going to give me a "Mary cut" are you mom? She knows I know exactly what she means! We've dubbed the ultra short bob cut "The Mary"

I vote for bangs, too. Not a perfect solution, but they do help. My girls would never keep anything in their hair -- my 4yo likes headbands, but they don't last long in her hair, and the 14yo was a total refusenik for years and years. The day she consented to wear her hair in braids was a serious feast day in my life.
Anyway, we have done bangs until they're older. My little one's do get overgrown, but I eventually get around to trimming them, and she's good to go. Otherwise I don't keep their hair short. I prefer the look of no bangs, but we just can't cope. We're a total no-hair-elastic zone, at least until mid-elementary school.
And I agree -- you have a darling Cousin It there.
