I need some advice. My nursing 5 month old on a daily basis has one or two diapers that are very copious amounts and very liquidy.
I use disposable diapers, but nothing can hold the amount and texture, so it's everywhere. It's getting that I'm afraid to take him out until he's finished his business.
I keep thinking maybe it's food allergies, but because it only comes one time a day (although maybe I change it too soon, so it's two in a row), I talk myself out of it.
Any advice on how to cope with this? Or just reassurance that I'm not the only one daily going through multiple outfits and a horrible mess.

You're not the only one, Jenn! 
My boys seemed to explode and leak even more, but Katie has exploded and leaked for the last two days in a row! It is especially bad if the explosion takes place when baby is in the carseat. If I hear her explode behind me, I know she'll need a complete clothes change.
The moral of the story - don't go anywhere without a ditty bag and at least two changes of clothes.

Sorry - just reassurance. And... don't buy bargain brand diapers. I wear a size up when I think "it's coming." And I only use pampers...

Same here - I am finding cloth better at containment, for whatever reason (well, some kinds) - we use both cloth and disposables, so I try to *predict* the big blowout and have on the best one for the job.

I was having the same problem with my son when he was around 6 months old and a friend told me, like Maryan said, to go a size up. She said she "allowed" for it to happen twice. After that she immediately switched to the next size up. I didn't think it would actually work, but it did work for me with my son. Not sure if it will work for every baby though.

Maryan, if the baby wore the diapers, they'd be more effective.

Oh - since Maryan reminded me - I did a little experiment recently on diaper performance and holding capacity (um...unintentionally) - Pampers work way better than Huggies!
I used cloth on all of mine off and on and thought they held/absorbed the liquidy poo better. I'm considering getting them back out for this little one because little girls and disposable diapers...well...lets just say that sometimes the disposables leak that little blob of sodium silicate gel and it just ooks me. Am I weird?

I'm not dealing with leaks, but a fingerpainting duo.
Fortunately, they've thus far contained themselves to simply painting themselves and their bedding.
But oh woe is me...usually its just ONE doing it...but when BOTH?!?

I would really consider switching to cloth. My 3 month old was doing some amazing productions -- even his *elbow* was coated recently
I switched to cloth anyway to try to save some pennies (and the planet) and I can honestly say that it's not that much extra laundry -- because there are *never* any leakages. I use Tots Bots which might not be available in the US but I'm so impressed. I'm even using them at night now which I've always been wary about before.

I agree. My first thought was that cloth dipes would soak up more than the paper dipes. Louis was a champion pooper - Heavens above! I use Ecobaby dipes and love them.
As for the increased amount of stool, are you eating more fruit with the nice weather? More fluids? If your diet has changed he may be feeling it. If there is no mucus in the stool, I wouldn't worry too much about the allergy thing just yet. If he has begun solids, some of those things can increase stools. Peaches really did my kids in. Pooooop-o-rama.

That's funny, because I've been using Pampers and recently to Huggies because that's what they had at Costco. My analysis is about the same. Less up the back but more through the legs in Huggies.
I'll try the one size up. Do you ever double diaper? I just can't keep the boy in clothes.
Right now I don't think dh or I are ready to embark on the journey of cloth diapering, but thanks for the tips. I'll tell you the amount of choices in that area I just don't want to even go there!

Many of my babies would have exploding diapers fairly regularly. For my current little one, I bought a Piddle Pad to avoid the inconvenience of having to wash the car seat cover. I thought it was a very nifty invention. The irony is that I never needed to wash it for the typical blow outs! My youngest was (and is) quite a little lady and very rarely needed a change of clothes due to a diaper leaking.
You might want to consider a Piddle Pad if the blow outs occur en route to anywhere.

You know, I did notice far more explosions when I was eating what I shouldn't... on one trip we were living off pizza, and boy, oh boy, there were more explosions then than ever before.
So, do consider what might be upsetting your baby--every day like that is definitely not right.

My oldest (now 9 1/2) had diaper "explosions" at least daily from the time she was months old until she was potty trained (not completely until way past three-another story). Didn't matter what she or I ate, she never had a formed poop until she began going on the potty (I guess she just held it longer then?) I would bring this up at every well child check, but since she was healthy and consistently gained weight, "they" were never concerned. The mess was the worst before she began walking and was in the lying position more frequently. We are talking head to toe messes. Huggies worked best for us, but that is really relative. This sometimes happened multiple times daily. Interestingly, she NEVER had a poop at night, and again, once she was going on the potty and holding it longer, the pattern was instantly, completely normal and predictable. I had such concerns about her ever having bowel control, but as predicted by our MD, it was a nonissue.
Just wanted to let you know of our experience. My other two girls did not have this problem at all. I had actually forgotten about it until now. 
Hope your baby's situation is shorter lived.

We use cloth and I find cd's a lot better at holding in explosive poo. The best for containment are Kissaluvs
( www.kissaluvs.com )- *never* a leak with those. I also love Blue Penguin All-in-Ones ( www.bluepenguin.biz ), which are almost as leak proof as the Kissaluvs. Both are waaaaay better than any disposable dipe out there, including the national brands. For me, I just think cloth is healthier for a baby's skin, too. We all have really sensitive skin around here, so I have to be careful what kind of material I put next to the little one's skin. As an adult, I wouldn't choose to wear "crunchy" paper underwear  so I try not to use it on the dc!

Cloth definitely contains the explosions better. When we travel and use disposables, I found Pampers premium (swaddlers and cruisers, in the purple package) to contain the best. Also, I would sometimes put a diaper cover over the disposable, which helped a lot.
I remember one 4th of July when ddd was 6 weeks old. She was in her little patriotic outfit lying on the bed with dh, and she "exploded." It soaked through her, and through the bedspread, blanket and sheets, all the way to the mattress pad. My dh was horrified!
