My oldest has been taking a computer class at a PS all year. It's been the high point of his week. There are no PS students. The class was a blocked time for homeschool students only.
Recently, the school closed, but the class continued. Now all the homeschool students have stopped coming. It's just Nicholas and the teacher.
My DH says he cannot go anymore because he doesn't like him in a classroom for 2 1/2 hours alone. He actually has a larger class size at home. I won't take my son back to respect my DH's wishes.
I just wonder if you would be uncomfortable with your child in a classroom situation alone? It just occured to me that music lesson could be the same circumstance or some other class.....
This is a discussion that DH and I will have to talk out a little more because of future classes.
Does your family avoid classes that don't have other students?

My children took a group music class, and then we learned that for 15 minutes out of each 45 minute class the teenaged son of the teacher took each child by him/herself into another room in a distant part of the house. We were all uncomfortable with even that short period of time and stopped the class.

for one on one tutoring type situations, I would need to know the person. But I also make no excuses for the fact that I'll take a book and sit in the room too.
Which solves the problem nicely. Luckily for me my sister is willing to watch the other kids for the hour that we're gone so I'm not in a bind on choices there.

I was given extra lessons at school to work towards an additional examination. It involved me being alone with a teacher for one lunch time each week, rotating between two different male teachers each week, out of sight, tucked away in a little room. My teachers' behaviour was above reproach, but it certainly stimulated my mind in an unhealthy way - I was a teenaged girl at the time, and it was not exactly good for me.
I would be uncomfortable with one of my children being alone with a teacher, because it might be a temptation to the child or the teacher. That's just based on my own experience, and the fact that I am naturally cautious with my children.

In the "safe-environment" trainings that diocese are implementing it is a situation that you would be cautioned against. It would send up yellow flags. I wouldn't have a problem with only one student in a classroom with doors open and part of a bigger, busy school setting. The fact that this school is now closed makes this situation less than ideal. Now, in all likelihood most times there would be no problem, but there is a risk. And it would be in a situation like this were a perpetrator would have the ideal situation.
I wish you could talk some of those homeschoolers back into taking the class. Is the school closed permanently or just for the summer? Is the class set to continue for much longer? - Jodie's option of going along might work for the short-term.

I think this is pretty common in most outschools. My youngest goes to speech therapy once a week at our local ps, and I take my other dd and we sit in the room with her, but not where she'll be disturbed. But if she was a student at that school, she'd just be called down from her class for her speech appt, and sent back afterward. I'm not entirely comfortable with it, and think that schools need to make more of an effort at open-door policies. Most parents don't even give it a second thought.
Dh teaches CCD, and part of their training included not being alone with a child, making sure all doors are open, and making sure someone knows where you're going & why if you change rooms.

I go to all classes with dc where a one-on-one situation is typical or likely. Two-deep leadership (a la Boy Scouts, where no boy is allowed to be alone with an adult, ever) is a much better way to go.
