Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have noticed that my 10 year old son has started being more affectionate towards me in the way of hugs, snuggles, pats and rubbing his hands on my arm/shoulder area. Sometimes in his awkwardness it has crossed over into the chest area and we have talked with him about being aware of appropriate touching areas. I know I shouldn't be arguing here since I am sure it won't last for long, but he has never been a "snuggly" child before. Could this have something to do with puberty? I know he is a little young for a boy, but I thought maybe it was something I needed to have Husband discuss with him.

Any thoughts?

One more quick request... can you recommend any resources that I could give to my husband in helping him deal with explaining this time of change to my son? I totally trust him to handle the subject with the respect it deserves, but I would like to provide him with some resources that I know we can trust to help him if he feels like he needs it.

Posting quickly before I get to my exercise for the day:

Seven Cs for Boys

The Joyful Mysteries of Life - my husband has started reading this with our son (he'll be 12 in July), only certain parts though, as there are a couple of chapters (paragraphs within chapters, really) that IMO get too explicit for a child this age. But on the whole a good resource.

ETA the AAP puts out a publication about puberty that describes the physical changes a boy goes through during this time. The version our pediatrician gave me (thank goodness me, and not my son)...anyway, the information sheet had two sides, and the second side included information I did not think was appropriate for our child. I did however find the same document online in PDF format where I could print the first page, but not the second.

I was surprised to see this topic here today, because I was having the same thought about my 10yo ds. I noticed this morning it looks like he has a couple of zits on his face. Isn't 10 REALLY early for boys to start this stuff? Should I be concerned that there is something amiss? I was totally unprepared for this to start, he is my oldest and I was sure we had at least another 2 years before we were even close to this. I am totally out of touch? I would also love to hear some suggestions for books on this subject, for me and for him. Thanks!

Blessings,
Betsie

Patty, could you send me the link to the PDF? Thank you for the other suggestions. I really like the Seven C's for Boys!

Betsie,
I was also thinking we had a few years to go before this became an issue which is why I asked the question. My mommy radar is buzzing slightly and I knew these ladies would help me decipher that message!

Here you go: Puberty - Information for Boys from AAP (pdf file).

You're welcome!
