My kids are involved in a production of Peter Pan. My daughter's Wendy, a son is Hook, another is Smee, and another is Michael. I've got a couple of pirates and a lost boy. We're responsible for costumes.
The director asked that I find a Victorian nightgown(high neck, lots of ruffles, if at all patterned, only lightly ...) for my Wendy. I've looked online and have found patterns in my finished product price range. The nightgowns run anywhere from in the middle $40's range to over $100.
Any ideas?

My first thought was Past Patterns. $16 for a pattern, but it doesn't seem quite right.

How big is your Wendy? Is there anyway she would fit into a small woman's size altered? That way, you could search for some cheaper "granny" style nightgowns and add the extra lace and ribbons at the neck, sleeves, and along the seam at the front.
There are often gowns like that at the thrift store for a few dollars. If the print wasn't exactly right, you might even be able to dye it pink or periwinkle blue enough to make the print not show up on stage. And it seems you could take in a seam up the back and/or sides.
I know there are patterns and such (though maybe not cheap) for Victorian collars to add to blouses or dresses (or nightgowns in this case).
There also might be a dress that you could buy a couple sizes big and add some embellishment for a "nightgown" look. Maybe those really high waisted girls dresses with pinafores.

I'm all thumbs when it comes to sewing and I don't believe there's enough time between finding all the supplies and the production to learn how to sew.
What I'm *really* searching for is an already-finished, beautiful Victorian nightgown ... really cheap. Can that happen? A thrift store is an option, but it's not a CERTAIN option ... I will definitely be scouring thrift stores for my pirates/lost boy. Hopefully, I can find a nightgown as well.

oh ugh... the place I was trying to think of is catalog only (not online) and I can't remember the name of it.. and I think their gowns were either red floral strip or blue floral stripe anyway.
Not much help.
Ebay would be a good choice for not paying full price?

Here's one on sale for $18. Maybe more print than you'd like. Of course, the only size is a 12/14, would that fit? You could probably easily add some extra lace and pink satin ribbon with minimal sewing skills.

I just checked Vermont Country store to see what brand they carry and then did a search for Lanz girls nightgown. There might be some other sale options out there.

I think you're thinking of Lanz of Salzburg gowns?
