I have a child who has a problem with scruplosity. Has anyone ever dealt with this in one of their children or in yourself? I don't know how to help this dc. This child is tormented with thinking she is in mortal sin when she is not and whether her confessions were valid. We are trying to find a time to talk with a priest but other than that does anyone have any thing that we can do to help? Prayers appreciated.

Scruplosity could also be a symptom of OCD. That's something that you might want to be aware of. OCD can sometimes hit children as young as seven or eight. If talking with a priest does not seem to relieve your child's anxiety there are lots of resources on the internet and in most public libraries.

Thank you, Lisa for asking, and Colleen, for linking the previous discussion.
We are going through this now with my oldest. It's interesting that there is a connection with OCD because he does sometimes exhibit OCD tendencies.

I don't want to scare anyone, but I've realized recently that someone close to me has OCD. While they do not have the obsessive religious thoughts, I have done quite a bit of research on OCD over the past few months in general. If you think your child might have OCD, it is definitely worth checking out. People, including children, with OCD often try to hide their obsessions and compulsions; other people think they are just slightly off or rude, inconsiderate, lazy, or needy because their anxieties and rituals make them late, forgetful, or scared to do things they think will make them more anxious.
Most people don't realize that what they have is OCD for several years after onset, and most wait an average of eight years to get treatment our of fear and pride. OCD is not only stressful for the person who has it, but on everyone around them as they constantly seek reassurance. And no matter how many times you tell them that they don't need to worry about something they can not stop. And the fears sometimes morph into a new fear.
I don't want to hijack this thread, but that is why I suggested looking into OCD if the talk with the priest does not offer relief.

My son had scruples --
here is an article
We ended up getting the book by the author called Understanding Scrupulosity.
We did consider the possibility that he had OCD but in fact, it turned out to be a sheerly spiritual problem. He can manage it now, since he was able to get some good spiritual direction.
It's important to find a priest who understands the idea of scrupulosity -- the first priests he spoke to tended to dismiss the problem with reassurance that things weren't as bad as they looked, or bracing advice to just get over it.
