We have been blessed to receive tickets for our family of 9 to attended Pope Benedicts mass at Yankee Stadium on April 20th.
I am looking for traveling advice. What kind of area is the stadium in, is it possible to take the subway to get there, or would you recommend other transportation?
Are there any recommendations for family friendly places to stay that won't break our pocket book?
My husband talked to a woman who I believe is in charge of helping travelers. To use a bus to transport us from a hotel to the stadium and back would cost $45.00 per person. That is pretty costly times 9!
Please pray that God will provide us with the affordable means to get to New York to see the Holy Father!!

The subway goes to Yankee Stadium. Find a hotel in Queens, maybe up by LaGuardia airport, as it's not as expensive as Manhattan. Have a great time!

Not sure if it's the type of thing you're looking for.. but I have a list of hotels (with websites) that I put together.. and I believe they're all ones I checked and may have suites and such available which works better for large families. So if you'd like that.. just let me know.

Please excuse my ignorance of New York, last time I was there it was before children and a native of the city took me around. Is the subway pretty easy to navigate for someone who has no experience and with 7 children and is it safe?
I really appreciate your advice!!!

It's safe, for sure. NY is one of the safest cities in the world. My older kids use the subway all the time. I find it pretty easy to navigate, but I don't have 7 kids. Looking at the ages of your kids, I would assign a younger kid to an older one for traveling. The subway is free for kids under 48", so it'll be nice and inexpensive for you. Be very, very careful with a stroller. Use a carrier if possible.
Get a subway map (it's online) and review it before you go. If you have your travel path laid out, it's super easy.

We went to NYC about seven years ago en route to Connecticut. The only hotel I could find was in the Meadowlands, right across from Manhattan in New Jersey. The first night we had a taxi take us through the Lincoln Tunnel into Manhattan (for Jesus Christ Superstar on Broadway), but the next day we drove to Yankee Stadium to see a game. I want to say that one of the interstates took us across the river and there were signs leading us to Yankee Stadium. I don't remember being the parking all that difficult to navigate, either. However, we got there extra early, we didn't have any kids to distract us, and I don't know how the construction of the new Yankee Stadium effects things (I assume that it's in the Bronx, too).
After the game, we headed on to Connecticut (and Boston). On our way back home, we stopped in NYC again for the day. We parked down by the Statue of Liberty (I was never so happy to pay $50 for parking). We then took the subway up to Penn Station and walked around more of Manhattan. The subway was ok, not quite as nice as D.C., but on par with Chicago.
Our real subway adventure was on the way back to our car. We're riding along when there's a garbled announcement that they will only be opening the first six train cars when we get to Battery Park (our stop). Everyone in our car starts looking at each other with confused fear, then we all start making a run for the end of the car and jumping from subway car to subway car until we all felt that we had arrived at one of the first six cars.
The subway wasn't complicated but I would definitely have the older ones help be your eyes and ears. I hope you have a wonderful trip.

The current fares for visitor Metrocards (i.e. subway /bus passes):
o 1-Day Fun Pass: $7.50.
o 7-Day Unlimited Ride MetroCard: $25.
I second MacBeth's carrier/sling idea. Strollers can be a pain, especially in crowds, going up stairs and trying to get through the turnstiles or gates. If you have to, bring an umbrella stroller.

Unrelated to your post: bring cash. I bet the concession prices at Yankee Stadium are astronomical. And I don't know what their policy is on bringing your own food/snacks.
Hopefully our parish will get enough tickets and I can attend too!

I work in the area surrounding Yankee Stadium. It is not the best neighborhood and I don't even think there are hotels around there anyway. But the train goes right there so it's not like you have to walk anywhere.
As far as the subways being safe, I imagine a ton of people will be heading over that way so you simply stay with the crowds of people.

Jeanne, last summer we stayed in Long Island City, across from Manhattan, near the river, and we spent four days and even some late nights (think Broadway shows ) in Manhattan and we did all of it on foot and by subway. It was just me and six kids, aged 5yrs to 18yrs.....I NEVER took my hand off of the 5 yo while near subways or in NYC.....he often rode on my back, just so I knew where he was  ......but we always felt safe. It was a blast...and we can't wait to go back....for longer this time!!
Enjoy and have an amazing time...I will try not to be jealous!
