Hello everyone. I'm very, very new here... just posted an intro this afternoon. I just had to share an interesting Mom-moment from today.
Today we had a tea party. I have just finished reading Real Learning and thought the idea of teatime was fantastic. I also figured my guys would never go for it and would think it too "girly." (I have a 12yo boy, 7yo boy, 3yo boy and a 1yo girl.) When my daughter was taking her afternoon nap, I announced that we'd be having tea. The boys said as long as it was chai they were in! Those boys watched the clock for over an hour and could hardly stand the wait. We set the table with cups and saucers (just my everyday stuff), put placemats around (I don't even own a tablecloth), got the water heating and muffins plated. Even my 3yo was itching to get teatime started... and he didn't even break his cup and saucer!
Wouldn't you know it, those boys LOVED every minute. We read a poem and then another chapter of The Long Winter while some classical music played in the living room. It was incredible - my insanely active boys loved it! AND they told Dad about it as soon as he got home from work... and informed him that we'd be having tea on one of his days off this weekend.
I love that after homeschooling for 6ish years, we had a WOW! kind of afternoon.

It's funny isn't it, I thought my boys wouldn't go for it either but they love it
My brother recently sent me photos from his College, Campion College, of a tea party they had, imagine High Tea with the College students and Professors on the College lawns, organised by one of the 'graduated homeschool' male students. The pictures were very elegant. I asked K why T organised the party and he said "Something to do, it was study week and he was bored"
Maybe one day your boys may be organising High Tea at College.

I love the image of your kids being all excited and telling DAD about tea-time! Can you just IMAGINE what was going through his head?

Who knows? I'm really getting a kick out of knowing that boys in college are still enjoying teatime.
Right now I'm aiming for once or twice a week. We have a couple of activities that get in the way this year. We'll see over the summer how this develops though. I can easily see it becoming a daily ritual. :)

I think he's the one who mentioned that it sounded a bit girly. Bet he wasn't counting on being invited to tea. I wonder what HE'LL think when we do it?

My boys love tea time too! They were even invited to a tea house this past fall to attend a friend's (girl) birthday tea. There were only 4 children present and the tea house owner was surprised and pleased to find 2 of them to be boys - mine!
Come summer, we move tea time to the screen hosue with iced tea or lemonade. Oh, that sounds lovely right now (it is 28 degrees out as i type).
Thanks for the reminder - we need to make tea time happen a few days a week again, right down to the music, poetry and tableclothes.
