My 6th child is turning 5 in February, and I have no idea what to get him. He really only likes balls and things for big kids. I don't want to bring more clutter into our home, nor do I want to spend a lot of money (since he really doesn't care) but I want him to have numerous things to open, since that's what he likes most these days. We are already filled to the brim with art supplies from Christmas and stockings.
any ideas are greatly appreciated.

One of the biggest hits here was a bunch of matchbox cars and one of those printed rugs with the roads and stuff on them. I find it very clutter-free because the rug stays on the floor (or could easily slip under a bed) and the cars are all stored in a basket on a shelf when not in use.

My 5 y/o Dominic loves this mask/voice type thing that he got for Christmas. it is from the Cranium people, but the name escapes me. It has been played with every day for hours, worn to bed, out to the store, etc, and is loads of fun for all of us- for a plastic toy it is not annoying at all- they look so cute and sound so hilarious as they make up new voices and faces. our other favorite is Playmobil. but that could also jsut be my ds. He has lived and breathed playmobil since age 2!! it is his passion!

My about to turn 5 yr old is going to be getting a belt positioning booster seat Legally he needed to be 5 to move into it.. and he's chomping at the bit.. so since I needed to get it anyway.. wrap it up and let him have it as a gift
For my nephew who just turned 6 we got him a dvd set for his birthday but because of his birthday falling during the school break.. he wasn't getting anyone extra coming to his birthday.. and he also wanted lots of things to open.. so I spent an extra $3 or so.. and got him some of those large size army men (he'd bought a few with his own money so getting more was great) and a few boats for the bathtub. not a big deal really.. only $3 but it gave him 2 more presents to open.
anything you can that he's already getting.. break it down into multiple gifts.. if you think they won't make sense without the other stuff.. wrap the stuff in small packages and then put them altogether in one gift bag.

Fun food snacks! Pudding cups, Tooties, cheese and crackers pack, rollups, and juice boxes.
Other ideas: cartoon bandaids, rub on tattoos, flashlight, and personalized cup.

You said he likes big kid things...my little guy (also 5yold) loves sports like the olders. So he enjoyed receiving an NFL tshirt at Christmas, and when he turned 5 my mother gave him a pirate shirt, he felt very big with that one. Also, my children always like special sheet sets, sometimes Target has these on sale. We have two sets of Spiderman, Star Wars, Dora, Barbie, etc...my dc love these too (and so do I, something new they are more inclined to help change their sheets!) Oh and another little something idea...those fun Crest spinbrushes, you can get all sorts of varieties and they are about $5.

send him on a treasure hunt for his gift (s).
this will be both time consuming and exciting!
wrap up one clue in a box that he will open. that when he gets the clue (little help if needed) it will lead him to the next clue and so on.
you can make as many or few clues as you like...
we have done this and all the kids have LOVED it. and it didn't really matter what the gift was at the end.. big or small etc just something they will for sure like...by the time they found it they were all excited! lol
if your little one is into a theme (say like pirates, cowboys etc..) with each clue you can have a piece of a costume to put on also. to wear to the next clue...
ex: things hidden with clues for a beach theme... shovel, pail, new suit, towel. and then he finds a boogie board!
or hotwheels. hide a new little car with each clue and then at the end have a track set wrapped.
I also like the snack ideas! good one!
flashlights are always popular in our house, along with glow sticks. little animals.

This is the biggest hit with my little guys. Big guys love it too.
ETA: We like the one with the strap over the head best, stays in place better.
