Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

In sheer desperation, dh has given me the go ahead to invest in a new baby carrier. We have a patapum which feels like a prison to baby and a strait jacket to me. The ring sling I like for being quite easy to use but the back carry feels precarious.

So we thought of a wrap and found one that should be good for baby girl as well as our 4 year old who still needs to be carried for emotional reasons at times.

The thing is I am hideous clutz! I even find a ring sling a challenge and have been known to throw it on the floor in a paddy, so as I look at the tying instructions which experienced mamas make look so easy, I feel a sense of panic.

Has anyone got experience of a Maya Tie or a Ellaroo Mei Tai? I wonder if these would have the soft, natural, feminine feel of a sling and a wrap but be easier on my nerves? I am a fat little thing and buckles and straps and those awful chest straps on the ergo/patapum style make me look and feel like an utter chump. I like how a sling feels natural and soft, not like the baby is strapped into a device that is strapped onto me.

Hey Lucy! You might check out a few of our past conversations. They have been really helpful to me!

This is the most recent one, but there are others.

This one.

Or this one

If all else fails, you might pm Lisa (Lisbet) - she seems to have a lot of experience with the wraps you're referring to.

From what I understand from a number of people, the wraps do indeed have that soft, natural feel that you're looking for. I think it's one of the reasons many are drawn to them. HTH!

I hae a friend who really really recommends the mei tai for a back carry.. it's tied on so still straps but softer than the buckles and such.

Yes, I think the mei tai has more of a wrap/comfy feel than the "industrial" feel of a structured carrier.

I LOVE mei tais and they are easier to tie than a wrap but just as safe for back carries.
I've used at least a dozen differet types and my faves are:

1.The Ellaroo delux that you referred to is my all time favorite. I used this when it was known by another name but it was the best with the wider shoulders and headrest. It's worth the price!

2. www.sachicarriers.com

3. napsack mei tai is another good one I liked

www.attachedtobaby.com has lots of different ones to choose from!

I have found the homemade ones I've used to be great too if you sew or know of someone who does.

Important details:
-be sure the shoulder straps are at least 3.5" wide-I like 4" or more myself but any narrower and they will bite into your shoulders after awhile
-be sure to ask how long the waist straps are to be sure you can wrap them around with plenty of room to tie
-be sure the shoulder staps are padded well unless they are 6" or wider which don't need padding typically since they wrap over your shoulder.
-be sure the straps are of soft denim, bottom weight, or another soft sturdy material. Quilters cotton typically is not a good shoulder material (but fine for the body) since it tends to roll into itself more and will bite into the shoulder.

Good luck!

Lisbet has instructions on her blog and I found those to be the easiest carries to execute. Especially the back carry--I consider myself a pretty accomplished baby wearer but I could never find a back carry I liked.

I really liked the look of these Cwtshi mei tai style carriers and was very tempted to get one for back carries. (In fact, I'm still tempted!)

I have a wrap and failed abysmally trying to use it on my back - partly because it is stretchy, but I think there would be a steep learning curve with any wrap.
