Please give me some practical tips for this. So far, I've only come up with saying (to my boys): "Reach between your legs and wipe/put the tissue where the poop comes out." ??? Anything else? Tricks/tips? TIA.

OK, I'll chime in here. I think that what you are saying is good. I also have had to tell them to use more toilet paper and keep wiping until the toilet paper is clean. Otherwise, you're not getting it all off.
The 6th birthday is my cut-off around here for potty help.

It is around age 6 that they finally seem to get it! It is a very liberating feeling when you are no longer hear, "I'm done!" from the bathroom. Hang in there, the light at the end of the tunnel is close.

My children always said it in a sing-songy voice. I literally laughed out loud when I read that, Mary Chris!

I taught my boys reach behind them, not between their legs to wipe their bottoms. And, then I have them wipe until the paper is clean.
Now if only they'd remember to FLUSH!

I said the same and then refused to micromanage. I had a neighbor kid scream until I went in to wipe his bottom for him, and then he tried to tell me I didn't do a good enough job. Believe me, I did because he made sure I had a clear view. Honestly, I would rather deal with dirty underwear at my house than have my kids terrorizing other mothers! I figure at some point they will be motivated enough to be sure it's done perfectly. Until then....well, we don't hand down underwear.

My 3 yo ds does it himself with those flushable wet wipes. They work great and are not too expensive. (we buy the parent's choice brand at walmart for under a $1)
Although, I never really thought about how he would do at a house without wipes. May need to occasionally "run out" and see how he does!

My 3yo DD also wipes herself with the wet wipes. I bought them the first time around, and NEVER regretted it!
I told her to wipe from the back (I demonstrated holding her hand) until the wipes are clean, then she is done.
She also runs out and points her bum into the air for me to check !
