Has anyone used a Mai Tai? I have a Moby, but I'm feeling VERY discouraged after several attempts at a back carry with my 3 month old. The back carries with a Mai Tai look a lot easier, but they're so expensive. Does anyone have any reviews on this type of carrier?

I personally love the Kozy (www.kozycarrier.com). You can get a used one for a pretty good deal (I paid $50) on the FSOT forums at www.thebabywearer.com.
My co-leader (for the babywearing class I teach) sells carriers and prefers the babyhawk. Prices are comparable between the two.
A stretchy wrap like the moby is difficult to do a back carry with, ime. I prefer a woven wrap like an ellaroo (a more affordable option) or a didymos (gonna cost more than a mei tai). The mei tai does have a shorter learning curve for back carries, and I use it almost exclusively now that my little is heavier.

Andrea, I am not a MT kinda mama. My husband on the other hand loves his MT. (Kozy). One of the reasons I don't like a back carry in a MT is b/c the waist tie, I just can't stand anything around my waist. Sure, there is the option to tie it tibeten style, but then I have issues with shoulder digging....
So, while I really do like a moby for back carries, even for my heavy babies, a woven wrap would be a better option for you. Right now I have MB on my back with 5 yards of gauze that I picked up off the bargin bin at Wal Mart, the whole thing cost me $3.00. I had an Ellaroo that I sold to buy a didy a few years ago, and really, I think I liked the Ellaroo more.

Which is why it is so nice to be able to try things before you buy (which is why I teach the classes). People are so different. I love the weight that is distributed to my waist--a soft structured carrier (like an Ergo) does that even more! My shoulders are not strong, and I used a wrap almost exclusively until they were 6 mos or so, but once they are heavier, I like more weight away from my shoulders and neck.
You might check here for any babywearing groups near you. That way, you can try a few different carriers irl to see what you like. Or, you might be able to get someone to help you with the back carry with the one you have.

I like my mei tai - I made mine from directions here. Cheap with clearance fabric! I'm not much of a seamstress, but it wasn't too hard.

I loved my Kozy, but sold it to a friend. We also love our Ergos and used them a ton when the twins were tiny. We now use our Ergo only about 1-2 times per week (twins are 29 mos).

I made mine too--actually, I have some material sitting in my closet right now to make a second one because my husband stole mine. I used these same instructions, with some variations. The sewing is pretty much just a bunch of straight lines. I think mind ended up costing about $10 for the fabric and thread.
