Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Ladies,
The mastitis is over, but today I noticed that Amelia has oral thrush! I'm starting to feel some tingling while nursing her, too.

I heard that there's a cream that treats both mother and baby at the same time. I've also found online that Nystatin is not really effective. I'm going to be using some grapefruit seed extract to rinse her mouth and me after breastfeeding, but before I call the doctor, I'd like to get some more info. Any suggestions?

I think that Grapefruit seed extract really stings. I would not use it as my first choice. You can also swab her mouth and your breast wtih acidophillus. You can try swabbing yourself with a vinegar and water mixture. Many people have found gentian violet to be very effective, although baby will have a purple mouth.
Also, you should boil any toys, pacifiers, and bottle nipples the baby uses. You will also want to boil your bras or wash them in really hot water.

Oh, dear. Just what you were hoping didn't happen!

Nyctantin is probably the cream being referred to for treating both mother and baby. It's actually a cream for mother and an oral suspension for swabbing baby's mouth. In many cases it isn't effective because the candida species is getting resistant to it. It does sometimes work for some mother/baby pairs. Stronger more effective treatments for yeast include clotrimazole, miconanazole, or fluconizole.

The gentian violet is also usually pretty effective and is available over the counter, but as mentioned it is very messy and stains clothing purple.   The vinegar water solution is sometimes an effective home remedy (the proportions are 1 tablespoon vinegar to 1 cup water)

Grapefruit seed extract treatments that I have seen are only for mother, not baby. Mother can take oral GSE or apply a diluted solution to the nipples after feedings. Dr. Newman has information on candida treatment listed here. Candida protocols

Additional suggestions: Reduce/eliminate consumption of sugar and dairy products. Drink more water and some have been helped by adding zinc, garlic and B vitamins to diet.

Again, anemia is also a factor in thrush.

Whatever the pediatrician prescribed for the baby - it has to get to her mouth. The pediatrician here just told the mother to put it on her breasts (the OB and her DR. refused anything for her) as that was probably the most effective means of getting it to the baby anyways. You would want to double check with the pediatrician - but the medication wasn't anything special and it sure helped both mom and baby quickly after what had been a very miserable first 3 weeks.

How frustrating! We'll pray that you find what works best for you and your baby. Here's a link to more information on   thrush.

God bless,

Thank you for your concern and websites. We've been doing the GSE and acidophilus, but Amelia was not getting any better. I was fearing that she'd get dehydrated from not wanting to eat or drink or nurse. So the ped. presribed Diflucan for the baby and I'm using some antifungal over the counter on myself after I nurse. I'm also doing garlic, GSE, echinacea, etc...

Thankfully, I haven't gotten the deep breast pain typical with intraductal thrush though I see that my skin is showing some signs. Amelia is doing MUCH better today PTL! We still have a journey till we're done. I'll keep you posted!

I have found this site to be the best collection of breastfeeding advice. Not only does it have information, but it also has compiled helpful links: Kelly Mom. Here's her compilation for Thrush. Hope you are feeling better. You are doing so great for persevering. One of my cousins wouldn't go to the doctor for help, and so had to give up bfing her little one, the pain was so bad.

We're doing much better. After not being able to locate some Gentian Violet, I asked the ped. for some Diflucan for the baby. It's taken in 6 doses (1x/day) and by the 2nd dose, her tongue was almost all clear and she was able to eat and drink again.

I'm usually hesitant about meds for my children, but this one was a blessing. I can't imagine having to spend days or weeks suffering. She was at risk for dehydration because it hurt her so much to eat or drink.

I've been applying an OTC antifungal after every feeding and changing my breast pads after every feeding. I'm peeling and red and sore but only externally, thank God. I have had that deep, yeast breast pain before and it is soo terrible.

I'm also taking my prenatals again so that I don't get anemic (or stop being anemic). Thanks so much for your help and concern!

Hi Debbie,

We're doing fine. Amelia's thrush is gone and I'm hoping I'm done with it too. I still have a laceration on one side where I stuck to the breast pad. That still hurts.

We've started weaning though. I'm having some unexplained health issues (possibly adrenal depletion) so we've started the weaning process, I'm sad to say. It's been a hormonal and emotional roller coaster!

Thanks for thinking about me!

I'm so sorry to hear that you're having to wean. After all that effort!!! How disappointing and frustrating. Our prayers are with you as you get through this difficult time. I don't know your different health issues, but often nursing can continue if the doctor is aware of how important it is to you... They so often say to wean before considering other options or its actual necessity. Regardless, we know God has great things in store for you. Trust in His plans for you.
