Okay, I have a couple of cleaning questions for you pros:
How do you get permanent marker out of clothing?
How do you clean kids' sports sandals (Lands' End) with velcro? If I throw them in the washer, won't that mess up the velcro?

I've put them in the washer about once a season. The velcro seems fine. I have also sprayed them with a disinfectant cleaner, let sit a few minutes and rinsed them off. (The older kid's sandals can get stinky.)

I attach the Velcro to its matching piece and machine wash.(Brigid's went to camp and endured 3 days of rain and a week's worth of muddy hikes. She was very proud of her tent's one shower in a week status as well.Some day I will remind her of this  )
Fels Yellow soap and a scrub brush also works with an in the sun dry time.

Oh, I love the challenge of stains! I'm a bit twisted I think in that regard.  I did a search, so I have several opinions below. Bottom line, the ink is permanent and VERY difficult to remove.
You may need a special solvent or a lot of time to work on it. Try going to your local fabric store for ideas.
I found one person said that Oxi-Clean applied several times got the permanent marker out. That's what I would try...first try some rubbing alcohol. Then most of my stains come out after soaking in a solution of oxiclean and detergent. It may take several days...don't give up hope.

I also saw some ads for this MOTSENBOCKER'S LIFT OFF. Has anyone used this?

Oh, my gosh, Jenn, I have the same twisted thinking  Yesterday I tried OxyClean on a steak sauce stain and it did not work. Next I sprayed the stain with Shout's Action Foamer and it worked. It's not too strange to enjoy this "cleansing" activity!!
Can't add much to the excellent answers above except for calling Lands End themselves. They have super customer service and are sure to have had this question before.

Dear All,
I have much success with old fashioned Hair Spray, something old fashioned like Aqua Net with propellants (I know, not good for the environment!). It works on all blue ball point, and fresh Sharpie. Spray, rinse, and spray again if needed. Be sure to put paper towel underneath as it will bleed and make a stain on something else (experienced here). And I am big on Oxyclean for almost anything, plastic sandals soaked overnight get clean and un-stinky.

I've decided that my part-time job title is "Stain Remover" . Since we have gathered together the experts, please tell me how do you know that the stain is gone when the fabric is wet? Particularly on dark clothes. I have made the mistake  of throwing clothes into the dryer, thinking that the stain was gone only to find that it had been "baked" in.

When I'm on the ball, I hang the item up to air dry till I know the stain status. It can be worth it. I've gotten hard stains out after trying severral times. Soaking a couple of days in Oxy Clean works great.

Now, how does this work when training children to do wash? I always here that the kids should be doing laundry. Inevitably, though, whenever I simply ask the kids to "switch" the laundry, it ends up that there was something with a stain that I had planned on checking but forgot about. They throw it in the dryer and the stain is set.
I am a bit of a control freak anyway and when that happens it confirms my belief that I need to do it for it to be done right.
By the way, the sandals look great! I threw them in the washer. It took two cycles, but they are clean. Of course I left them in there instead of putting them outside to dry. So all the kids had wet sandals when we tried to leave for a 10am movie this morning. Oh well...

Children or husbands...it's all the same. If I have some "special needs" clothing, I make a separate load(s) so that no one else will shrink or run or dry the clothing. I have lots of clothes that I think last longer if they aren't dried in the dryer. So I have two loads of cold -- dark cold and white cold that most end up hanging on the racks to dry. And the special stained clothing or tablecloths are soaked and washed in another load. I don't have lots of kids now, but this is how my mother did it, too.

I bought the stuff at the suggestion of members of this board, and I think it's been helping my general stain fighting to add some to most loads of laundry.
Now, when you say you are soaking something in Oxiclean, how much dry Oxiclean and how much water are you using?

Me, too! This is probably why my mom never had us do our own laundry until we left for college!! She's a bit of a control freak, too!
Now why is that I can remember, when pulling clothes out of the washer to be put in the dryer, exactly which pieces had stains and where they were, but I can't remember where I left the keys.....or anything else!

I've been hanging up the stained items to dry lately & that does seem to do the trick. With dark clothes however, they tend to be pretty "linty" if not dried in the dryer. Any suggestions?

Once to you know the stain came out, you can throw the item in the dryer with a wet load and that should take care of the problem.

Well, I've varied. But I usually use more Oxiclean than it says (2 scoops rather than 1)...and ALWAYS add detergent. Oxiclean doesn't work well on its own. I've done it in a bucket of water for one item, or filled a washer full of water and soaked it. I start with smaller amounts, check on the item...if it hasn't come out, I start with new water and add more the next time.
