I realized that not many people know about an Ergo alternative. I love the Ergo carrier... but cringed at the $90 price tag.
Then I discovered the Patapum which is almost exactly the same but $30 cheaper.
I bought mine on ebay several months ago and love it. The distribution shifts weight from the back to the hips. I can carry my 9 month old in it with ease and even my 36 pound 2 year old for some time without feeling too bad!
Just thought you'd like to know about an alternative.

Thank you for posting this! I was looking at an Ergo for when my little one gets older, but I will take a look at the other as well! The price did scare me away a bit!

The Ergo is worth every cent if you are on the fence! We just got it last year for our sixth and I use it constantly -- he really loves it. When we are out and about at zoos and theme parks you would be shocked how many people have asked about it. I balked at the price for a while but finally caved.

The patapum and Ergo really are the same in construction if you have them side by side. The main difference is that Ergo has an extra small pocket or 2 and the bug lining fabric (which was my reason for getting the patapum since DH said no way to that fabric LOL)
I think the Patapum only comes in black, tan or navy while the Ergo has more colors now.
The patapum is a great value and carrier IMO.

Can anyone compare this with the Baby Bjorn carrier? I can't decide which would be better. With most carriers, I tend to get back-aches as my babies are quite large. Once I can move them to the back position things improve, but I have never been able to carry them in the front position very well. Thoughts?

Becky, once you go Patapum/Ergo... you'll never go back to Bjorn.
The difference is in the waist belt; it distributes the weight onto your hips. I get achy wearing a baby in a Bjorn after about 30 minutes. My shoulders feel tense and my back hurts.
But if the weight is on my hips, I can trek around for a couple hours with my heavy little one. I've even wore my 35 pound 2 year old on my back for about an hour with no problems.
The new version of Bjorn has a waist strap I believe, so I can't attest to that. But any traditional carrier that lacks the around the waist strap is a waste of money IMO.
EXCEPT>>>>>>>> for slings... which serve a particular purpose and time in baby's development. (FWIW: of the MANY slings I've tried... I'm a devotee of Kangaroo Korner's adjustable fleece pouch. It's snug, and comfortable and flexible... can't be beat! With this, my Moby Wrap -which works great for front carrying if you have back problems- and my Patapum... I have a baby carrier for all ages and situations)

Two other things: Patapum also makes a toddler carrier for heavier babies on up to about 60 lbs!!!
I also wanted to share that this store has the black patapum on sale for $58.65!!! That's as good of a price as you're going to find for this product new!

There is no comparison IMO  The Patapum/Ergo is so much better on so many levels than the Bjorn.
Even the "new" Bjorn with it's back support thing that looks horrid to me cannot compare.
Here's a few things that are better:
-Easier to get on/off
-distributes weight better to the hips as posted above
-can carry heavier babies
-shoulder straps are positioned better so they don't dig into your neck
-better lower back support for baby with a wider butt space-it is not good for their legs to hang down like with the Bjorn
So that's my .02 on that.
I much prefer the patapum for back carries when they get bigger.
HOWEVER, I also have to say the MOST COMFY front carrier ever are mei tais, an asian model of carrier.

I have about 3 mei tias left in my stash but was up to about 8 at one time-just to coordinate with clothes

Ann, mei tais are great front carriers. But have you tried the Moby Wrap? While it takes a bit to get used to... I think it is hands down the most comfortable carrier on the market once it's on.
The nice thing about mei tais however, is that almost anyone with basic sewing skills can make one!

I tried wraps but the mei tais were faster on/off for me and the moby wrap only lasted until about 18lbs or so then it needed readjusted because of the stretch factor. I'm lazy so like the mei tais

We've had a Patapum for our third, because I balked at the price of an Ergo. I've seen Ergos and they really seem pretty similar. The Patapum has been wonderful and will be for some time to come- she's 18 months now. I think you could get away with just the small. If you were in doubt then the Ergo would be better value as you only need the one. We don't plan on getting the toddler one.

I bought my Ergo gently used, it was/is in beautiful condition. And it doesn't have the bug pattern + the infant insert, and the attachable bag. 
I really love my Ergo,and dh does too, he loves to use it. We always hated carriers before, they were too cumbersome and hurt your shoulders/back. I would probably have bought the Patapum, if I would have known about it.
