The fifth appliance in the last 6 months has bit the dust. What can you recommend for a fridge that will get a good workout taking care of 9 people? I was thinking of a bottom freezer type so that I can SEE into the fridge and make it easier for me to clean. There are so many brands...which one to choose? What about that new LG brand?

My friend has an LG and she loves it. She hasn't had it long, though. I don't know about long-term use since the brand itself is fairly new.
We are Kenmore people around here. All of our appliances down to the vaccum are by Kenmore or Kenmore Elite. We have a french door, bottom-freezer Kenmore Elite fridge, 25 cubic feet, that is wonderful. I will say that the bottom freezer ends up costing you usable freezer space because you need to leave a bit of extra room to let the drawers slide in and out. No packing stuff in. But the visibility and usability of the fridge section more than makes up for it, in my opinion.
We are probably going to buy a small chest freezer for bulk items and overflow (and the times we get a share of a pig or something from the local farmer and end up with thirty pounds of meat), though.

I am loving my frigidaire side by side 26 cu ft
but we do have a second fridge 17 cu ft in the garage with the freezer on top so the occational thing that is too wide to go in my side by side I can put out there.

OH we just purchased an upright freezer and while there I saw what looked like an upright freezer, but was actually ALL refrigerator without a freezer on it at all. It was Maytag, I think. I don't know if I can recommend the brand based on that, but when our frig goes out that's what we plan on replacing it with - a very big all frig refrigerator to accomodate our growing appetites. That will eventually give us a 22 cf freezer right outside the kitchen door in the garage and 21 cf of refrigerator space in the kitchen.

I've heard that the all-fridges tend to have problems.. something about them being the freezer design that's been tweaked so they're not that cold or something.. but I have a friend who's had problems with her's and that's what she's been told.

The all frig or freezer on bottom styles are not as energy efficent because cold air travels down. So the mechanics on an all frig or freezer on bottom styles has to work harder, which means it may burn out faster. However, the newer appliances don't have much life to them anyways from what I've researched and expereinced lately. These high dollar items used to last 20 years, now you're lucky to get 10 out of them.

I just want to say our GE fridge breaks down regularly, especially with the change of seasons. We hope to buy something better when this one goes for good.

We replaced our 'fridge about 8 years ago. It is an Amana side-by-side (I always wanted one).
When I was growing up, we had a full 'fridge. Always a Kenmore with the full service agreement (my dad was a very non-mechanical person). I cannot tell you how many applicances my mother has had replaced over the years because she buys Kenmore with full service agreements. But I do not remember having too many problems with the 'fridge other than the ice maker always seemed to be going out.
