I need some advice and encouragement! I'm at 35 weeks with #6. At 34 1/2 weeks, my OB measured me at 40!  I was very surprised, as I've been off white flour, white sugar etc. since Feb. 26th hoping to avoid gestational diabetes and to hopefully keep this guy from getting so big. Ha!
I had an ultrasound Monday morning and the radiologist is guessing 9 pounds, give or take 22 ounces. My OB is supposed to call me today...haven't heard from her yet. She's been laid back, but I'm not sure what she'll say she wants to do.
Anyone else been there done that and can share? I should add that #4 was a 2 week overdue 10 pound plus boy that tore my cervix and sent me to surgery. #5 was 9 lbs, 11oz. induced 10 days before due date; pitocin labor was not much fun! I guess I had gotten attached to the idea of going into labor myself this time...
I know God has it all under control; I don't feel depressed. I just want to go into it knowing what's the best for me and the baby and just knew you gals would have some encouragement for me.  I'll put in a prayer request, too.
Janet and Lisa - I know have had big babies...anyone else?

Hello Angela, so close now - very exciting!
My babies are always big ds9:10, dd9:8, dd8:14, ds10:1 - my last baby Michael was 11pounds exactly and my fundus was 6 weeks ahead of itself. My fundus is always ahead of itself except my second pregnancy. I am hypoglycemic and I suppose it if the flip-side of diabeties and therefore is probably the reason for my big babies. I tend to go over a bit, but no more than a week, Michael was 4 days over.
I too am needing to stay off white flour and sugar otherwise I feel deathly sick, but my body craves heavy food to combat the hypo's - like rice.
I can say that the last birth was the easiest birth (homebirth) out of the lot - I suppose what I can say in encouragement is that thank goodness it is not baby number one!  Your body knows what it is doing, everything has been stretched up before. Pray fervently that baby will be in the optimal position, I believe that is always important for an easier birth especially when they are big - I will pray for that Angela and that you don't go too far over.

had some here too.. 7:11, 10:2, 8:3, 8:6, 8:0, 9:6, 8:1
the big thing is to have a midwife.. or I suppose an OB but they're harder to find.. that knows to get you up off your back.. there's many different positions and you would likely do much better with a more upright position.. less chance of tearing.
Also you might look into a water birth.. it can help slow things down so that the baby comes slower and you are again less likely to tear. I have a friend who just had a water birth even though it was an induction (medically necessary - high bp) so having an OB and hospital isn't necessarily an obstacle.
Do remember that U/S can be off by as much as 2 lbs in later pregnancy.

Praying for you both, dear. My last baby (my 6th) was a biggun - 10lb exactly. If it hadn't been for the fact that he was trying to wave "hello" on his way out of the birth canal, I think it would have been quite easy. My babes are always late  .
Listen to your body, it will tell you what to do. May St. Anne and Our Blessed Mother be at your side!

Hi,
My babies were all on the big side too dd:9-1, ds: 8-8, and dd:9-8. I know it was not because of what I ate, because I couldn't eat, especially with the last one. With my last pregnancy, which was the biggest of the three, I LOST weight the entire pregnancy. When I conceived, I weighed 30 pounds more than when I left the hospital with her.

Nissa I have to giggle! My babies like to 'wave' too! In fact my 10:8 girl was trying to eat her elbow!
Michael, my 11pounder, as big as he was, was a 12 minute second stage due to having NO hand anywhere! He was in the perfect position in all ways, it obviously makes a difference - I remember specifically praying for this for I knew that these little things can make things a little harder. "PLEASE anterior! PLEASE no hand!"

I have had 1 big one 11#, the rest were average. Take the beforementioned advice, get off your back, and rest in the fact that your body was wondefully and fearfully created to do this!!!
You have my prayers, very exciting!!!!!
One more thought I always measure big, and in the last weeks slow WAY down!!!! I measure 40 about 35 wks!

I'll have to remember that for next time. I don't mind telling you that I'm not keen to have a repeat! I must learn to be specific!
I did pray for weeks that both Mary and St. Anne would be my midwives. I'm sure it was them who made sure I was in the right position to shift Louis!

My fifth baby was a surprise 10 lbs 12 oz. My sixth was 9 lbs 11 oz. My fifth baby was my second fastest delivery. I signed the paper work and answered the questions after he was born.

I have bigger babies too, all but 2 have been 9+ pounds, usually coming a week or two early. (My biggest was 9.14 at 37 weeks!) I also always always measure over. I wouldn't consider measuring 40 at 35 too bad really, considering you'll probably measure less than 40 next time as the baby settles deeper into your pelvis. I would also be wary of ultrasound 'estimates'. I have heard so many stories of them being way off. And indeed, stay off your back!

I have only had one "big" baby, at 9lbs 13oz. With my last baby, though, the ultrasounds measured her at weeks ahead of my due date. The dr who did the ultrasounds was sure I would test positive for gest. diabetes. Even when I didn't, he wouldn't believe it.
Well, he had me come back every couple of weeks, which I stretched out to every few weeks. (who has time for that!) When I was 38 weeks, I had one more ultrasound where they said the baby measured at 42 weeks and would be at least 10 lbs!
My midwife decided to try to put me into labor that day and I delivered Emily in the evening, all 8lbs, 7 oz of her! We were a little surprised!
So, just goes to show that for all their technology, they don't always get it right, or even come close.

All of mine, except for one, were quite big. 9+# -10# range. And though the labor times varied, the births themselves weren't bad at all. Just try to be in a good birthing position which uses gravity to help!

My dss were 9#3oz.-posterior, 9#7oz.-posterior, 10 even-head transverse, then posterior, 10#5oz.-anterior (wow- how easy!), 10#2oz-anterior, and the last and only c-section (he was waving "hi" with his foot!) was 8#15oz.
All were induced 2-3 weeks early, due to either elevated bp, or with #5, bleeding due to a partial placenta previa. The resident didn't do an ultrasound with #6 (I didn't care for her back with #5- isn't is funny when you get to know even the residents?) or I would never have been induced with him.
(I had epidurals with #'s 2-6, nothing with #1.)
I highly recommend turning as much as possible during the labor, side to side, on hands and knees, and walking, to help the little one get into position. My #3 was trying to get out, transverse, forever! His little head felt like a battering ram, but you just can't come out looking sideways. When he did turn to a posterior position, he went from 0 station to delivery in 9 minutes. That was quite an experience!
But I survived them all, and they were all fine, too. I will pray for your delivery, Angela!

Stacy, I can relate to all those posterior worries and the exercises - my first was undetected posterior in hospital that resulted in a ceasar, with my subsequent homebirths my midwife taught me to stay upright or forward for the last 6 weeks leading to delivery - if I slacken with these exercises by babies go posterior, they must feel comfortable there.
Using gravity during birth is also an advantage - I think there is wisdom and experience you garner along the way with all the births, so while my babies get bigger, I feel more confident to help myself and pray with more confidence.

I had many large babies - and all of them came early naturally. My biggest was 11 pounds. All my babies were posterior for most of labor (and some of my labors were lengthy). The biggest thing for me was laboring upright. Also, with my last, I actually lifted my belly up with my hands which helped the stretched out stomach muscles from all the babies. My hardest baby was my first, and only small baby (6 lb 12 oz)

Mine were all over 9# except one.
Slight tearing with the first (enough to need stitches).
Nothing else that was serious after that. I second that a good midwife makes all the difference.

Oh, I feel so much better already. Maybe I should print this thread off and take it with me when I see my OB next! Especially your story, Molly! 8:7! She never did call today, and I'm certainly not going to call!
All your advice is so wonderful! This hospital has moms labor and deliver all in one room. The end comes off the bed. So even though you happen to be a bit more upright, maybe it's not enough? I've *never* gone early. So maybe I'll switch my prayers to that. I've never had any problems with waving babies or babies in the wrong position, for which I'm thankful. I'll pray for the same this time!
I am soooo thankful to have you all as a resource and prayer warriors! You have eased my mind considerably! Thank you, thank you!

10lbs 9 oz
9 lbs 14 oz
8 lbs 10 oz
10 lbs 7oz
9 lbs even (and 2&half weeks early)
I never measure right. Measuring is a joke for me anyway.
Hang in there and don't worry. Diet hasn't done anything for me to reduce size. I think its genetic.
